Before the Big Ten Champion- ships come around in March, how- ever, Michigan will know how tough her competition will really be. She runs both Wisconsin and Michigan State in dual meets. This year's squad is dominated by freshmen and sophomores, and due to the recent rule change, none have ever experienced var- sity competition in the Big Ten. THE MOST prominent individ- uals on the team outside the fresh- men and sophomores are Larry Wolfe, who as a freshman last year vaulted 16 feet in the pole vault, which bettered the old var- sity record of 15'8"; John Mann, also a sophomore, has jumped 6'10%' " in the high jump in prac- tice this season, and another sophomore, Gene Brown, has hit :09.5 in the hundred yard dash and :06.2 in the 60 yard dash. Other sophomores who add depth to the team, especially in the middle distances, are Mike Imirie and Jerry Richards whose best 880 times are respectively 1:53.8 and 1:53.9. Freshmen also show good strength for the coming season and should not only strengthen the team but they will alsp assure Coach Dave Martin that none of his sophomores or other upper- classman will become indolent. The strongest freshmen include Trevor Matthews from New York City who has run a :20.8 in the 220 and :48.4 in the 440, Bob Pinchamn,, from Chicago, who has run a :09.6 in the 100, and Godfrey Murray from Jamaica who is strong in the hurdless. IN THE MIDDLE distances, Eric Chapman and Al Cornwell are best in the 880 with personal bests of 1:51.5 and 1:52.5 respec- tively. George Drew and Greg Syphax have both run :48.0 in the quarter mile, and Tom Swan adds more strength . to an already strong field of milers with his fast clocking of 4:13. The success of the 1970 track squad is not totally dependent on newcomers, however. The return-. ing veterans form the nucleus around which the rest of the team will shape up.
