THURSDAY, DECEMBJER 7, x.967 THE MICHIGAN DAILY THURSDAY, DECEMBER 7,1967 THE MICHIGAN DAILY P&E~! ~'JTWW :]l}G 1 1t IL 1: Pair By GRAYLE HOWLETT Associate Sports Editor The :people around Durham, N.C., like to talk about Vic Bubas' torrid recruiting. They ,.say that all the Duke coach has to do is walk in his office and pick up a strategically marked phone which is a direct line to every high school in the nation. It was two such calls made four years ago which resulted in a 93- 72 Duke victory over the Michigan cagemen last night. One was to Missoula, Montana (area code 406). and the other was to Cresap- town, Maryland (area code 301). Missoula housed a high school phenom named Mike Lewis. Cre- saptown had their counterpart in rangy Steve Vandenberg. The duo has more than paid back the phone bill, as witnessed by Lewis' game-leading 32 points last night, and Vandenberg's 23 tallies and 15 rebounds. According to Michigan head coach Dave ,Strack, the two 6-7, 225 pounders personally "destroy- ed" the Wolverines. "We just couldn't contain their big men," Strack moaned, "we just couldn't keep them off the boards." After holding the Blue Devils at bay most of the first half, Duke finally regained the lead with 1:05 left in the first stanza and left at intermission with a 41-39 lead. In the opening minutes of the second half, Michigan knotted the contest at 41-41, 43-43, and then a Bob Sullivan free throw gave the Wolverines their only second half lead at 44-43. Lewis' lay-up at the 17:34 mark gave the Blue Devils a -lead they never relin- quished. From here to the final buzzer Duke outscored the Wol- verines 48 to 28.' "It was this 18-minute span which killed us," a dejected Strack reported. "We played them good in the- first half, but in that second half we really made them look good." Defense Change Late in the first half, a Duke change in defensive strategy seem- ed to key the ultimate victory. With 6:14 left in the first half,., Duke guard Claude Claiborne hit a jumper to bring the Blue Devils within two at 29-31. As Duke of Devils Spark Wolverine Demise trotted back on defense Bubas jumped off the bench and told them to go into a 2-3 zone, aban- doning the old man-to-man align- ment. From this point on Duke controlled the momentum of the game. "We went into the zone for a number of reasons," Bubas ex- plained after the game. "We had been playing the zone in practice and we wanted to test Michigan's outside shooting. Also, we had been fouling too much under- neath. We thought from the zone we could keep Michigan from get- ting the 'junky' shots under the basket, and it might also help us to do a better job on the boards." In that first half, in which Michigan held the lead for almost 17 minutes, the Wolverines out- rebounded the Blue Devils 33-15. Also, Jim Pitts got most of his points under the basket or on free throws which resulted from fouls; under the bucket.3 Outboarded In the second half, with the Blue Devils operating from the 2-3 zone, Duke outboarded Michigan 38-13. IThe zone completely cut off Pitts in that stanza, as he wasonly able to get free on the baseline for one lay-up. "At half-time we decided to stay with the zone," Bubas later noted. "We liked the way we were get- ting back at Michigan on the boards." Strack, on the other hand, was reluctant to give credit for the Duke victory to the zone. "I didn't think at the time that the zone would hurt us that much. At first, we whipped the zone. We were still getting the ball into the baseline. Again it was that last 18-minute stretch which beat us. Their big men destroyed us inside." "The way we try to break a 2-3 zone is to run a 1-3-1 offense. This means that we send Pitts in- to the baseline and have our pivot-man slide off. But they were crowding Rudy at the post and he couldn't get free." Rudy at Post The reason why Tomjanovich was playing the post instead of his usual forward position was that Dennis Stewart ran into , foul trouble when he hacked Dave i* Vandy, be By JOEL BLOCKI Last weekend, when he was in Ann Arbor. Kentucky's venerable coach Adolph (Baron) Rupp was discussing some of the top teams in his area. "Duke should be a tough team this year. They've got a couple of big clows over there who can hurt you if you're not careful," forecasted the Baron. Unfortunately, Wolverine coach Dave Strack wasn't present for Rupp's revelation. His forever- struggling band of cagers fell prey to Duke's two top-notch big men, Steve Vandenberg and Mike Lewis. "There's got to be a key somewhere, and we better find it quick. Sure the team is sick at heart now but there is one bright spot. We challenged a fine Duke team in the first half." Duke, sporting a 2-0 record this year, hop back to Durham. There the Blue Devils start preparation for their next contest against Ala- bama at Tuscaloosa. And Vic Bubas will probably be making a few phone calls. Louisville Victor LAWRENCE, Kan.
