CASUAL WEAR: Look for Bright Colors " " " 40 a* s " " w CUDD O V r NS FROM --- , 0OMP414lS s 0 " " i f " " " " 4 " " " 0 " In Boots, To By NADINE COHODAS The major trend in casual wear this winter is bright, exciting, and daring with a touch of tradition. Pant-dresses, kilts, pant-skirts, and knit shells are the newest items with many accessories to complete an outfit. For added spark as well as warmth this winter vinyl boots, both knee and over-the-knee length, "clunky" shoes with chains or buckles, textured or opaque tights, and zippered gloves have been added to enhance an outfit. The brightness of this year's casual apparel appears in almost all the fashions from knit tops to skirts to tights and boots. To go with this new surge of gaily at- tired legs, skirts, kilts, pant-skirts, and pant-dresses are very, very short. Tradition with Flair On the more traditional side, sweaters and skirts are still in the conventional plaids and solid colors but with fancier matching sweaters. Some of these newer ps and Skirts sweaters now have belts and pock- ets in addition to being less bulky than last year's. 'U' coeds can readily find both the newer and traditional apparel in the Ann Arbor stores. Saks Fifth Avenue's Coed Shop features the brightly colored, ultra-short knit pant-dresses from $15 to $45, as well as kilts, pant-skirts, swea- ters, and knit shells in the $3 to $20 range. Kilts and pant-skirts il the $9 to $16 range are carried by Marti Walker and Kay Baum long with a variety of striped and checked shells and sweaters, $5 to $15. Villager and Ladybug } For the more conservative dress- er, the recently-opened Bagpiper Shop on South U., the Village Store, the Marilyn Shoppe, and Kay Baum carry the traditional skirt and sweater ensembles, along with slacks, wool bermudas, and accessories. All of these stores feature the Ladybug, and Villager lines with the skirts, weaters, slacks and bermudas running any- where from $14 to $25. I see three di- rections: The classic look inter- preted in shelled-out shallow vamps (squared or V-throated) on squarish toes and bold heels; completely open sandals, a strip- '" ped feeling but not really strippy; and the use of stretch materials in types of footwear other than boots . . . open shanks, instep straps, and so on." k2 Capezio is showing the func- tional, fashionable stretchy shoe look, too. Being previewed are sandals and soft, pliable flats, us- ing leather trims to hold stretchy vinyl in place. Sandler of Boston uses shiny stretch combined with leather. Kickerinos does a monk-strap shoe-boot in stretchy vinyl, and offers it in a range of 20 colors. A variety of stretch materials are being used for all sorts of looksshiny, t e x t u r e d, smooth leatherish, glittery, Each season, Sandler of Boston promotes one color in depth for its moccasin story. For next spring, it is Woodhue, a hand- some reddened brown with the look of an actual wood grain. De- tailed with gleaming brass studs, it will be made into new moccasin styles and eye-catching handbags. Boots are selling big this year, many Ann Arbor stores report. "Sometimes we sell even two or three different styles to one cus- tomer."
