By LAURI HARRIS It is Thurdsay afternoon- and Patricia Dinsmore, '69, is waiting to catch a plane from Detroit Metropolitan Airport to Miami and eventually join the college crowd in Fort Lauderdale., She plans to -stay for the weekend and fly back to school early Mon- day morning. Now you may say that the average college student cannot afford to take a weekend vacation in Florida, and several years ago' you may have been right. But such a trip is now within the means of many students beacuse of the Student Standby System now operating on most airlines. The main advantage to Youth Fare is that it allows a person between the ages of 12 and 21 to fly half fare anywhere in the continental United States anytime Calendars make great gifts- get them at Student Book Service exclusive of the major holiday rush days when reservations and full fare is required. This means, for you disbelievers, that Pattie Dinsmore can fly to Florida for for $73.40 roundtrip and spend a weekend in the sunny South. To obtain a Youth Fare Card, you must take three dollars, proof of age, and fill in an application form at any airlines office or travel representative. Your card is transferable among all the ma- jor airlines until your twenty- second birthday when it becomes void. Cards from some airlines offer discount rates on theatres and hotel accomodations. The one main disadvantage is that you are not allowed to make a reservation to fly half fare. $ut if there is a seat vacant at depar- ture time, it is yours. It is there- fore wise to have several alternate flights in mind, just in case the one you had originally planned to take is filled with full-fare or mil- itary passengers. There are several airlines which have a reservation system applica- ble to the stand-by group. You get one third or one quarter off the original price and are assured a seat on the flight you desire. In- cluded in this group are Alleghany, Delta, Eastern, and Northwest Air- lines.
