J. Simpson broke loose with a 64-yard touch- down run in the fourth quarter that wrecked the undefeated sea- son for top-ranked UCLA yester- day and sent the Trojans whirling on to the Rose Bowl with a 21-20 victory. Simpsop's sensational run tied the score at 20-20 and Rikki Al- dridge kicked the extra point to give the Trojans their first vic- tory over UCLA in three years and atone for their 3-0 loss a week ago to Oregon State. Executive Director Tom Hamil- ton of the Pacific Conference made it official that Southern Cal would go against the Big Ten representative in the big New Year's Day bowl game in Pasa- dena. Simpson, a junior speed mer- chant, began his memorable run from the Trojan's 36, ran to the left toward the USC bench, re- versed the field, opened the throttle and raced on in with no one touching him. Equally brilliant was UCLA quarterback, Gary Beban, who just a minute before had thrown a 20- yard touchdown pass to Dave Nut- tall that put UCLA in front 20-14. But the try for the extra point by Zenon Andrusyshyn was wide to the left and the failure cost UCLA the Rose Bowl trip and possibly their No. 1 national rank- ing. Beban, in the Bruins' last touch- down drive, completed four of five passes for 57 yards of the 65- yard drive for what looked like the winning tally. UCLA halfback Greg Jones ran r ~I 12 yards on a Beban-guided drive for the Bruins' first touchdown, but a Beban pass into the flat later in the first period was in- tercepted by Pat Cashman, who raced 55 yards for the tying touch- down. Simpson broke through the middle of the line on a 13-yard burst midway in the second quar- ter, carrying two Bruin tacklers with him, to score after Earl Mc- Cullouch rambled 52 yards on an end-around play. The Trojans led at the half 14-7. Beban hurled a 53-yard scoring strike to George Farmer early in the third quarter to tie the game 14-14. Vols Clinch SEC MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Tailback Walt Chadwick passed for one touchdown and ran for another, and Karl Kremser booted two field goals yesterday as second-ranked Tennessee romped to a surprisingly easy 204-7victory over Mississippi. The victory, Tennessee': first over Ole Miss sinces1956,virtually cinched the Southeastern Confer- ence championshipfor the Volun- teers and made them an odds-on choice for a trip to the Orange Bowl. Mississippi's lone score, in the third period, came at the end of a six-play drive that covered 41 yards after a pass interception. Bobby Wade plunged over from the one. The rest of the game was dom- inated by Tennessee with quarter- back Dewey Warren moving the Vols through the air and Charlie Fulton and Chadwick leading a crushing ground attack. -Associated Press USC COACH KOHN McKAY (white hair, dark tie) watches from the sideline as O. J. Simpson, his junior sensation, breaks into the clear on a 64-yard gallop for Southern Cal's third touchdown yesterday. This score, and the PAT, brought the Trojans from behind in the fourth quarter and gave them a 21-20 victory over top-ranked UCLA. More important, it gave the Trojans a Rose Bowl berth. Fumble recoveries by tackle Dick with Steve Owens running seven Williams set up two of the Vol yards on the first possession after scores, the Kansas touchdown. * * * * * TRILOGY ON RACISM AND POVERTY PART l l: "THE BATTLE OF NEWBURGH" A documentary film about the welfare system. By The Associated Press MINNEAPOLIS - Brawny Min- nesota shattered Cinderella In- diana's dream of a perfect season yesterday as Curt Wilson ran for four touchdowns and passed for another to give the Gophers a 33-7 victory for the inside track to the Rose Bowl. Minnesota needs only to defeat Wisconsin next Saturday to make its third trip to Pasadena in eight years. Indiana, which had reeled off eight straight victories to gain a fifth place ranking in The Asso- ciated Press college football poll, not only .saw its perfect record smashed, but its hopes for the school's first Rose Bowl appear- ance were dealt a crucial blow. The Hoosiers must defeat Big Ten leader Purdue this week to qualify for Pasadena. Or the Hoosiers still could go if Wisconsin upets Minnesota. Wilson led a revitalized Go-i pher offense which battered In- diana's defense with a punishing gronud attack. Only in the second quarter could the Hoosiers con- tain Minnesota. Indiana bounced back from a 7-0 halftime7deficit to tie the score on a 76-yard drive in 15 plays with a second half kickoff. Barry Gonso scored from one ward out. Minnesota went back in front 13-7 before the third quarter ended on Wilson's one-yard keep- er to cap a 68-yard drive. Indiana threatened but a drive bogged down at the Minnehota 26 early in the fourth quarter. After that, Minnesota turned it into a rout. The Gophers drove 79 yards to send Wilson across from the three, then recovered two fumbles on the Indiana 23 and scored both times. Wilson passed 17 yards to Charley Sanders on a deflected pass for one and kept a yard for the other. Purdue Humbles MSU LAFAYETTE - Purdue's Leroy Keyes, national scoring leader, caught a pass for one touchdown and threw for another yesterday in a 21-7 football victory over once mighty Michigan State. The twisting, turning Purdue halfback picked up 193 yards on the ground in 24 carries in helping keep the Boilermakers unbeaten in Big Ten Conference play. Keyes' touchdown gave him a Big Ten season record of 15, rubbing out his own mark set a week ago. He has scored 19 in all games. Purdue, beaten only by Notre Dame and Michigan State last year en route to the Rose Bowl, finished its vengeance business for the year with a convincing victory. The Boilermakers-and Keyes -scored two touchdowns in the first quarter. Keyes passed 12 yards to end Jim Beirne for the first touchdown and then caught a 20-yarder from Mike Phipps for the second. Perry Williams, the big Purdue fullback who ground out precious short gains all afternoon, rammed over the Spartan goal in the second quarter from eight yards out for the last Boilermaker touchdown. -Associated Press MINNESOTA QUARTERBACK CURT WILSON leaps over the shoulders of Indiana's Jerry Greco and Brown Marks for the Gopher's go-ahead touchdown in the third quarter of yesterday's game in Minneapolis. Wilson, by scoring four times and passing for another tally, personally ended the Hoosier's eight game win streak and gave the Gophers the inside track as the Big Ten's Rose Bowl representative. 0 2 Bob Baltzell kicked all three extra points. He missed a 32- yard field goal attempt in the third period. Michigan State got its touch- down in the third period on Bill Feraco's one-yard sneak at the end of an 80-yard drive. A 21- yard pass from Feraco to Allen Brenner and a 13-yard run by Regis Cavender contributed. * * Ohio State Tops Iowa COLUMBUS-Reserve fullback Jim Otis scored one touchdown and cracked Iowa's defense for 149 yards yesterday, giving Ohio State a 21-10 Big Ten football Midway in the third period, Long climaxed a 13-play, 84-yard march with a 10-yard touchdown strike to Bill Anders.
