Huff, who picked up 117 yards! against a stubborn MSU defense, literally overpowered the Spar- tans. With some help from fellow workhorse Dave Brungard, Huff kept Ohio State's ground game red hot all afternoon while quar- terback Bill Long shook up SMU with an occasional pass. Ohio State cashed in on two long scoring drives in the open- ing period as it grabbed a 14-0 lead and held Michigan State in check pretty well the rest of the way. Huff went over from the one to cap a 58-yard drive for Ohio State's first score and Long raced over from the four for the second score on a 34-yard scoring drive set up when a bad center pass forced Michigan State's Dick Ber- linski to get off a 20-yard punt on the dead run. The punt car- ried only to MSU's 34. Ohio State tucked things away early in the final period as it zipped 80 yards in 10 plays with Huff diving through for the final yard that sent Ohio State out in front by 14 points before a dis- appointed homecoming crowd of 76,235, who sat through snow showers and 32 degree weather to see their Spartans lose. "We're absolutely out the Big Ten race," said obviously irritated Spartan coach Duffy Daugherty after the contest. "I thought we'd reached the depths the last two weeks but I think this was our worst performance. I don't want to take anything away from Ohio! State, but we just aren't the team we were two weeks ago," he concluded. Keyes Keys Purdue CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Fantastic Leroy Keyes, the nation's top ma-I jor collegiate scorer, ripped off three touchdowns, passed for another and amassed 224 yards rushing yesterday to lead sixth- ranked Purdue to a 42-9 Big Tenj football victory over Illinois. The junior halfback began his display in the second quarter after the Illini had taken a 3-0 lead in the intermittent snow flurries on a 51-yard field goal by Dan, McKissic, a school record. At the start of the second period, Purdue drove 77 yards helped by runs of 39, 18 and 13 by Keyes. But Keyes was stopped two-feet from the goal and Illi- nois took over. Purdue got a safety when a snapped center to Illinois punter Terry Miller deep in the end zones sailed over his head. Keyes' first touchdown soon followed. He set it up on a 22-yard run and capped it by drilling across from the three. , Keyes, who played only on of-j fense although he is a defensive bear, later streaked 11 yards to score, ending a 50-yard drive that included his 14-yard run and Mike Phipps' 13-yard toss to Jimj Bierne. It left Purdue ahead 14-3' at the half. In the third quarter, a bad fourth-down snap back by cen- ter Bruce Erb gave Purdue pos- session on the Illini 28. On the first play, Keyes swung across after following a wave of block- ing. Minutes later, another bad cen- ter snap and a blocked punt gave Purdue the ball on Illinois 12. On the third play, Perry Williams crashed across from the two. Before the third period closed Illini Mike Murawski fizzled a punt for only four yards and Pur- due took aim from 12 yards out. Keyes, Mr. Everything, then flip- ped a scoring pass to Bierne. * * * Indiana Shakes Through BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Un- beaten Indiana, rated No. 7 na- tionally, survived a last-minute charge by winless Wisconsin in a Big Ten battle and took a Hopes shaky seventh, straight football victory yesterday, 14-9. Harry Gonso, Indiana's sopho- more quarterback, passed 15 yards to John Isenbarger for a first quarter touchdown at the end of a 30-yard drive. * * * Gophers Win on Shutout IOWA CITY, Iowa - Big Ten co-leader Minnesota nipped a surprisingly tough Iowa team, 10- 0 yesterday on a first quarter touchdown pass by quarterback Curt Wilson. Minnesota added a 21-yard field goal by Bob Stein in the third quarter. Minnesota's touchdown came midway through the first period when Wilson hit end Charley San- ders with a 17-yard strike. Iowa, meanwhile, got a credi- table performance out of sopho- more quarterback Mike Cilek, whose previous experience had been limited to half a dozen plays. Cilek was entrusted with the job after regular quarterback Ed Podolak, who had accounted per- sonally for two-thirds of Iowa's net yardage, was benched because *1 $; of acracked practice. rib suffered in Big Ten Standings -Associated Press OHIO STATE FULLBACK Paul Huff drives through the Michi- gan State line in yesterday's 21-7 victory by theBuckeyes. Taking a page out of the Ohio State football tradition, Huff personally destroyed the Spartans as Coach Woody Hayes found success in his old "3-yards and a cloud of dust" theory.
