Philadelphia trailed 37-32, when Larry Costello started the surge with a 32-foot set shot. Costello scored eight points in the rally as the 76ers went up 52-37. Baltimore rallied in the third period to twice slice the lead to seven points at the 5:03 mark on a layup by Jack Marin and at 4:16 on a field goal by Leroy Ellis. The 76ers, however, surged again, outscoring Baltimore 19-9 to the end of the third quarter for a 106-89 lead. The triumph enabled the Knicks to break a six-game losing streak. The 6-foot-10 veteran shatter- ed the Lakers defense in leading the knicks to only their second victory in eight games. High for the Lakers were Elgin Baylor and Mel Counts with 23 and 22 points, respectively. Los Angeles led throughout the first half. Reed put on a brilliant shooting display in the second period with an assortment of shots, pouring through 24 points. But the Lakers held on to lead at the half 61-57. The Knicks caught the Lakers in the third period when Cazzie Russell joined Reed in ripping the nets. New York led 90-85 after three periods.
