DETROIT (RP) - The Detroit Pistons unveiled their "new look" yesterday night with a 43-point third period to crush the Cin- cinnati Royals 131-108 in the Na- tional Basketball Association opener for both teams. The Pistons, with six new faces out of 12 players this season, were sparked in the third period by Dave Bing, last season's top rookie in the NBA. He threw -in 17 points, while Dave DeBusschere added 10 and John Tresvant nine to shoot De- troit in front 101-84 after three periods. Jimmy Walker, the Pistons' No. 1 draft choice this year, joined Bing with some brilliant passing and floor play. Bing finished with 35 points and seven assists to pace Detroit. Walker tossed in 10 points and added 10 assists. Deflusschere chipped in with 23 points and Tresvant 18 for the winners. NBA Standings THE VANDALS AND THE DRO KENE EADS . .Dave Weir The richly-deep sonorous voice rang out across the sea of anony- mity, composed of 103,210 faceless, nameless units of humanity (25 less that the record): "Will U.P.I. correspondent Dave Weir please report to the press box?" I was standing outside the gate of the Stadium unable to obtain press identification, and therefore unable to enter the press box. Other notable rejects lingering around the press entrance included Soapy (G. Mennen) Williams-who existed from 14 to 2 B. R. (Before Romney). Perhaps he too was unable tp obtain ID, but they didn't page him. The former head of state was clad in a traditionally-flashy suit and a traditionally green-and-white polkadot tie. As he was standing outside the gate, less than half of the passing faces noticed him at all, dand a much smaller percentage stopped long enough to shake his hand. The entire scene reminded me of the late show tragedies in which 'he fallen political god ends up standing in the rain without an umbrella. Meanwhile, back at the ball park, I was still waiting out by the gate, and the Big Voice was calling me inside. The main reason for the paging was my incapability to get where I belonged without iden- tification. The main reason for my inability to get to where I was being paged was my lack of identification to get where I belonged. For three years I'd been listening to that Big Voice, calling out the names and numbers of various celebrities. Like, "Will doctor number 319657 call nurse 662244 immediately?" For three years, my greatest dream was to hear my number echoing out across the Big Bowl. "Will 9577885 please call nurse 662244?' (Of course, since they've changed the ID cards, it'd have to be: "Will 374-50-6596-0 please call .. . And then, on that warm, sunny Saturday it happened. And he didn't even use my number; he called out my actual name. - It sort of would've made it all worth while. You know, all those cards and forms and blanks with the space for my number; all those long lines and big lecture halls and feelings of powerlessness, of alienation from Window A .. ... all those times the sweet corrupted voice of the raggedy lady behind the desk said "Are you sure your forms are correct?" three months before the note in the mail said "We regret to inform you that your forms came back . . . there must have been some error . .... all those times the girl at the registration impasse said "You'll have to go to 203 Administration Building," where they then said "You'll have to go down to room 114," where they only had A-L and said "Yours are in room 117" where they sent you to Window A, which only held a sign which said "Next window please" which meant punt .. . ... it might have been worth all of that if I'd only heard the Big Voice. gut unfortunately the loudspeaker system doesn't carry (See VANDALS, Page 9) I Why should you, confide in a guy you've never met before? Because the guy we're talking about is a college recruiter from Alcoa. And the only way to play it is honestly. He'll be on campus in a couple of days. And here's what we recom- mend you do at the interview. First, lay your cards on the table. Tell him what kind of work would really turn you on. Then, sit back and listen while he explains how your plans figure into Alcoa's plans. (You'll be surprised how versatile Aluminum Company of America can be.) Change for the better with Alcoa So make it a point to meet Alcoa's recruiter. He's a confidence man you can really trust.
