winams CMaims "Duster I
There was the first mild rhu-
barb of the Series in the first
inning when Briles' pitch hit Yas-
tremski. Manager Dick Williams
of the Red Sox came out to ar-
gue, claiming that Briles had been
throwing at his ace slugger.
Plate umpire Frank Umont of
the American League listened to
Williams and then called Schoen-
dienst from the Cardinal dugout.
Umont told the managers he
could handle the situation.
Asked how he pitched to Yaz,
Briles said, "I watched how he
swung against the others, and I
tried to work on him. I got him
twice on fast balls and once on
a breaking ball."
Schoendienst, beaming in vic-
tory, said he would pitch Steve
Carlton, a long, lean lefty, in
Monday's fifth game against
Jim Lonborg, who won a one-hit-
ter Thursday.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Unbeaten
Indiana quickly exploited two Il-
linois, errors and was steered by
brilliant sophomore Harry Gon-
so to a 20-7 victory in the Big
Ten football opener for both clubs
yesterday.
The game was only 86 seconds
old when Indiana struck for its
first touchdown as Indiana's John
Isenbarger fumbled driving for
the goal line and 225-pound Hoos-
ier tackle Rick Stickard fell on
the ball in the end zone for a
touchdown.
The Illini, who moved the ball
spasmodically and never when it
counted, lost a fourth down gam-
ble late in the second period and
Indiana seized the opportunity to
score on Gonso's three-yard pass
to Jade Butcher 17 seconds be-
fore the half ended.
The Hoosiers got an insurance
touchdown late in the final quar-
ter when Ken Kaczmarek inter-

cepted a toss by Dean Volkman,
No. 3 Illini quarterback and raced
26 yards into the end zone.

EAST LANSING - Michigan
State, bouncing back from two
straight nonconference losses,
cashed in on the speed of Dwight
Lee 'and Lamarr Thomas yester-
day as it overpowered Wisconsin
35-7 in a Big Ten football open-
er for both teams.
State's first three touchdowns
came on long drives of 63, 89 and
80 yards before Thomas tossed
a surprise 44-yard pass to Al
Brenner for state's fourth touch-
down.'
Frank Waters capped a 61-
yard substitute loaded scoring
driver as he dove over from the
two in the final seconds for
State's fifth touchdown.
Thomas had 106 yards to lead
MSU's attack.

Purdue Winsf
LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue's
Boilermakers bombed the North-
western Wildcats with three
touchdowns in the fourth quar-
ter yesterday for a come-from-t
behind 25-16 victory in the Big
Ten football opener for both
teams.
Leroy Keyes, Purdue's do-every-
thing halfback, scored three of
Purdue's touchdowns, two of themj
on long passes from sophomore
quarterback Mike Phipps.
Keyes' total yardage on pass
receptions was 184, a school rec-
ord.
Phipps hit Keyes with two
bombs, one for 79 yards on thef
last play of the first half andt
one for 65 yards on the first playt
of the fourth quarter. The second
gave the Boilermakers their first

a fumble by SMU's Eddie Valdez
late in the third quarter and Ha-
gen moved Minnesota 36 yards

63 yards in nine plays later in
the final p'eriod, passing 39 yards
to Chip Litten for the touchdown.
