Z5L' VLIN q Cardinals Favored in World Series I Thom pson's Pizza 50c OFF I By The Associated Press BOSTON-The St. Louis Cardi- nals, who breezed to the National League pennant, are ruled the favorites over the Cinderella Kids from Boston in the World Series that opens tomorrow at old Fen- way Park with Bob Gibson of the Cards facing Jose Santiago, a refugee from Boston's bullpen. The Red Sox returned to this planet yesterday after an over- night Journey on a pink cloud of bubbling enthusiasm and faced the future with optimism. As a club that moved from ninth to first in one season, they were not awed by the odds favoring the Cardinals. Sox Stunned The Red Sox wandered into the clubhouse yesterday, one by one, to pick up tickets and mail, pinch- ing themselves to be sure they really, were in the series for the first time since 1946. Dick Williams, the rookie man- ager who is almost certain to be named "Manager of the Year" in the American League, gave the players a day off after the dra- matic Sunday game in which they clinched the pennant by beating Minnesota 5-3. Williams and the athletes waited in the ball park for three hours until Detroit's de- feat in the second game had ruled out any chance of a tie and a playoff. Adair Able Buddy LeRoux, Boston trainer, said second baseman Jerry Adair, spiked Sunday, will be able to play tomorrow. Adair was gashed on the left shin while complet- ing a double play, a wound that required seven stitches. Mike An- drews will take his place if he can't make it. The lack of a left-handed start- er might prove costly to Boston against the Cardinal lineup with its good left-handed batting pow- er. Right-hander Jim Lonborg, who shared the hero role with Carl Yastzremski in the clincher, will be the second game pitcher Thurs- day. The Red Sox will be anxiously watching the Cardinals' reaction to the first sight of that green wall in left, only 315 feet away from home plate. Park Different "You have to pitch dirrefent in this park than in St. Louis," said Santiago. "Maybe, when they see the wall they will try to pull everything." After the first two games in Boston, tomorrow and Thursday, there will be an off day for travel before the teams resume Saturday in St. Louis for the next three games in the best-of-7 series. Harding Sent To Bulls DETROIT (P)-The Detroit Pis- tons traded seven-foot center Reg- gie Harding to the Chicago Bulls yesterday and asked National Bas- ketball Association waivers on for- ward Wayne Hightower. The Harding deal involved an undisclosed amount of cash and a future NBA draft choice. Hightower, a veteran forwardj who jumped to the rival Ameri- can Basketball Association during! the winter, signed an NBA con- tract with Detroit last week. The Pistons obtained him last Janu- ary in a deal with the Baltimore Bullets. Harding had not figured in Coach Donnis Butcher's plan this year. He was used briefly in two exhibition games. i I ; I Major League Standings 1' FINAL STANDINGS AMERICAN LEAGUE FINAL STANDINGS NATIONAL LEAGUE Boston Detroit Minnesota Chicago California Baltimore Washington Cleveland New York Kansas City W 92 91 91 89 84 76 76 75 72 62 L 70 71 71 73 78 85 85 87 90 99 Pct.
