Rico Petrocelli drove in the first two Boston runs with his 14th homer and a double as the Red Sox picked up ground in the fan- tastic American League pennant chase. George Scott led off the sixth with a hit to deep short. However, he was erased on a double play after Steve Whitaker robbed Reg- gie Smith on a drive to the bull- pen in right center. Ken Harrelson followed with a double to left center and Petro- celli, who singled his first time up, came through with a two-base hit off the left field wall. Lonborg drove in a run in the ninth with a ground-rule double. The Red Sox third straight vic- tory gave them a one-half game lead in the four-way race and a tie with the Minnesota Twins, who also won last night. Boston, Minnesota, Chicago and Detroit started the day in a vir- tual tie for first place. The White Sox and Tigers were idle. Lonborg allowed only three hits, including a homer by Tom Tresh, in going the distance at 1enway Park for the first time since May 19. Tresh led off the seventh with a shot into the Boston bullpen in right center. The only other hits off Lon- borg were by Jake Gibbs, singles in the first and ninth innings. Twins Down Birds BALTIMORE-Tony Oliva drill- ed a tie-breaking double in the eighth inning and scored on Bob Allison's single, carrying the Min- nesota Twins past Baltimore 4-2 yesterday and. sending them into first place in the American League pennant scramble. Dean Chance stopped the Orl- Twins Retain Shaky AL Lead oles on seven hits for his 18th vic- tory of the season as the Twins broke a first-place tie with the idle Chicago White Sox and De- troit Tigers. Cesar Tovar started the Twins' winning rally in the eighth with a lead-off triple against rookie Jim Hardin. After Harmon Kil- lebrew struck out, Oliva doubled to left, scoring Tovar to break a 2-2 tie. Oliva took third on a passed ball and Allison followed with a run-scoring single to right. Singles by Zoilo Versalles, Chance and Ted Ujhlaender had accounted for the tying run In the fifth. The Orioles took a 1-0 lead in the second on an error by Ver- salles and singles by Dave John- son and Larry Haney.1 Killebrew smashed his 36th homer in, the fourth, but Balti- more regained the lead in the bottom of the inning on Brooks Robinson's 20th homer. * * * Cards Bomb Mets NEW YORK-Bob Gibson of St. Louis, pitching for the first time since July 15 when he suffered a broken right leg, received credit for his 11th victory as the Cards trounced the New York Mets 9-2 yesterday.i Gibson yielded eight hits and two runs, walked one and struck out four. He was relieved by Lar- ry Jaster in the sixth inning after Bob Johnson led off the frame with a single. The big right-hander left with St. Louis ahead 8-1 and, because Johnson later scored, he was al- so charged with the second run. The Cards took the lead for good with a three-run third in- ning, capped by Roger Maris' two- run homer. Dal Maxvill's two-run single highlighted another three- run rally by league-leading St. Louis in the fifth. The Mets set a National League record when Al Schmelz, in the eighth inning, became the 25th different them this *R pitcher season. * * to be used by * I1 Giants Edge Astros SAN FRANCISCO-Jesus Alou's two-out single in the 15th inning, his fourth hit of the game, drove in Bob Schroeder, who singled, and gave San Francisco a 3-2 vic- tory over Houston yesterday. Trailing 2-0 in the ninth, the Giants tied the score when Bruce Von Hoff, who had limited them to five hits in eight innings, was lifted after a one-out walk. Tom Dukes allowed two singles, loading the bases, then Pat House relieved and hit Bob Ethridge with a pitch, forcing in a run. Larry Sherry gave up an infield hit to Jim Hart that drove in the tying run. Houstpn tallied on run-scoring singles by Ron Davis in the sec- ond and Doug Rader in the fifth. * * * Reds Rout Phillies PHILADELPHIA - Lee May's three-run triple in the sixth in- ning ruined Chris Short's wed- ding day by leading Cincinnati to a 3-1 victory over Philadelphia last night. Short, wha was married earlier in the day, set down the Reds without a hit for the first five innings, but singles by Leo Car- denas and Tommy Harper and a walk to Tommy Helms loaded the bases in the sixth. May's triple to center emptied them. Milt Pappas gave up 10 hits and needed last out help from Ted Abernathy. Wolverine head coach Bump El- liott yesterday added split end Tom Pullen and defensive end Rocky Rosema to the growing list of Michigan stalwarts who have succumbed recently to the flu bug. The sick bay roster now lists a total of seven Michigan players in- cluding five probable starters.
