Minnesota's triumph maintained the status quo in the tight race, as Boston, Chicago and Detroit also won to keep the spread from first to fourth at 12 games. Rollins belted a 3-2 pitch from loser Sam McDowell, 11-13, over '! center fielder Chico Salmon's head with two out in the first. The Twins had loaded the bases on singles by Cesar Tovar and Har- mon Killebrew and a walk to Tony Oliva. McDowell struck out Bob Allison before Rollins teed off. Rod Carew then singled Rollins home. Kaat,, also,11-13, gave up Joe Azcue's 11th home run with Tony Horton on base in the sixth. He also had to pitch out of trouble in the first two innings when the Indians got two hits each in- ning but could not score. Tigers DETROIT--Joe Sparrha blank- ed the Kansas City Athletics on two hits for his fifth shutout of the season and pitched the De- troit Tigers to a 4-0 victory last night. Sparma, 14-8, struck out eight including the first four batters he faced. He gave up a one-out single to Phil Roof in the third and Jim Gosger was credited with a hit in the seventh when his ground ball hit base runner Ra- mon Webster. Detroit picked up a run in the fourth when Kansas City starter Chuck Dobson, 8-9, walked Dick McAuliffe with the bases loaded. The Tigers knocked Dobson out in the fifth on run-scoring sin- gles by Jim Northrup and Bill Freehan. Al Kaline led off with a single took second on an in-. field out and scored on Northrup's hit. Red Sox WASHINGTON - Carl Yas- trzemski blasted his way out of a batting slump with his 37th and 38th home runs of the season yesterday as the Boston Red Sox battered Washington 8-2. Yastrzeinski, who singled in his first time at bat, capped a six- run Boston fourth with a three- run homer and then added a bases empty shot in the seventh. Both homers sailed into the Red Sox bullpen. Gary Bell, who won his 11th game, retired 14 straight batters between Paul Casanova's single in the second. and Frank Howard's second hit of the night in the. seventh. The Senators bunched five singles for both their runs in the ninth. * * * White Sox took over and retired the first eight hitters he faced before giv- ing up a bloop double to Roy White in the-fifth. He stopped the Yankees on two more hits before giving way to Locker in the seventh. He wrap- ped up the victory with the help of an eighth-inning homer by Don Buford. Angels ANAHEIM-Bubba Morton drove in eight runs, four in each game yesterday as the California An- gels swept a doubleheader from Baltimore, 7-2 and 11-4. Bases-empty homers by Rick Reichardt and rookie Leo Rodri- guez and a pair of two-run dou-. bles by Morton helped left-hand- er Clyde Wright, 4-3, win the opener for the Angels.
