The Spring Mobilization staged massive anti-war protests in New York and San Francisco this spring. The group, however, has never staged a protest in which it attempted to disrupt govern- ment operations. Ina statement, leaders of the planned protest called on "all Americans who oppose our govern- ment's aggression in Vietnam" to go to Washington, for "a direct, personal and collective confronta- tion with the warmakers." The Rev. Thomas .Lee Hayes, executive director of the Episco- pal Peace Fellowship, said: "We will gather in a massi've anti-warx presence, and some will take on the most serious responsibility of direct confrontation with the war machine.", In the statement, the committee called on demonstrators to "fill the hallways and block the en- trances, "Thousands of people," it con-I tinued, "will disrupt the center of H. Rap Brown, president of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, vowed to participate in the demonstrations as "an in- dividual." dAccording to Prof. Robert Green- blatt, on leave from Cornell Uni- versity and a national coordina- tor of the committee, said there would be small groups of protest- ors in Washington starting on Sept. 11, trying to disrupt the operations of various government agencies. Others will remain after the Oct. 21 rally to continue the "confrontation with the warmak- ers." Greenblatt said the committee will also present petitions to the United Nations accusing the Unit- ed States of committing genocide in Vietnam. Other key figures in the move- ment include former Special Fore- es reservist Gary Radar, comedian Dick Gregory and Msgr. Charles Owen Rice of Pittsburgh, as well as representatives from the Na- tional Conference for New Politics.
