Pl0 Petitioning for JOINT JUDICIARY COUNCIL. Now through April 3. P38 Life is becoming a bit more rewarding for Tony Mason. The veteran coach who up until this season had spent his time struggling with the Wol- verines' perennial trouble spot, the offensive line, has now tak- en command of the offensive backfield, the hope of the 1968 football squad. This backfield, which Mason rates "as good as any - we've had," ;will not take any of the. pressure off him as many hun- gry alumni are expecting the talented backfield crew to car- ry the Maize and Blue to Pasa- dena. Most of the optimism centers around two men, All-America halfback Ron Johnson, who Mason calls "one of the three best in the country", and the speedy signal-caller, Dennis Brown. The other two backs, full- back Garvie Craw and flanker John Gabler, have not won the acclaim thft their backfield mates have, but they too are key figures in Mason's plans for the fall. Mason has been particularly pleased by Craw's performance this spring. "He's been great," the coach says, "he's shown tremendous thrust and power." Last season, as a sophomore, Craw functioned mostly as a blocker, but Mason insists that he will do much more ball cAr- rying this fall. The quarterback spot has been one of the highlights of the spring with Brown at the helm. Referring to Brown's running, defensive end and linebacker coach Bobi Shaw moans, "We've been chasing him witl butterfly nets and we still haven't been able to catO him.', Bt Brown has not been the spring's only impressive field- general. Freshmen Don Moor- head and Bill Berutti have come along very quickly and they are expected to provide Michigan with fine depth at quarterback. W 4 Mason has made a majorxad- justient in the backfield ar- rangement by creating the po- sition of "Z-back" for Gabler. The coach developed this posi- tion in the hope that Gabler would be able to carry the ball more to help out the much used Johnson. Both offensive end coach George Mans and Mason have singled out Dave Farabee and Greg Harrison for their aggres- sive play at Z-back behind Gabler this spring. Depth at fullback, has also looked promising. While the Wolverines have only two full- backs behind Craw, Warren Sipp and Eric Federico, both have been running hard in this spring's drills. Only backup men for team captain Johnson at tailback are lacking. Kirby Sams, Lance Scheffler, and Glynn Chisholm have "developed but still have a long way to go," according to Mason. The Wolverine aerial ,attack appears to be basically sound with Brown again throwing to t . The primary question mark in the passing game "s at the all-important split rnd spot. This traditionally strong posi- tion for the Wolverines has no experienced occupant this sea- son. Sophomore Bill Harris is cur- rently running as she number one candidate to fill the vacan- cy left by Jim Berline's gradu- ation, although freshmen Tom McCaffery, Jerry Dutcher, and Greg Tanceuz nave all been fairly impressive so far. Nobody is planning anything dramatic for the spring's cli- maxing scrimmage at the sta- dium Saturday afternoon. Ma- son pragmatically sy, "The whole theory behind spring drills is to find players. We're not trying to impress people. We're looking for violence and poise, in people who can hit, When we find that then we will worry about the fancy stuff." Jim Mandich and Gabler.
