(M)-The man' sought as the slayer of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his name as John Willard. He spoke with a Southern drawl' He paid for his $8.50-a-week room with a crisp $20 bill, fishing it out of a pocket and holding it in both hands before handing it to the landlady at 422% South ~Main. He wore a dark suit and ap- peared to have little in common with men who stay in flop-houses. He took Rm. 5. It is no more than 12 steps from there to the dingy bathroom from which a kill-1 er struck Dr. King. Dr. King was shot as he stood alone on the balcony of the Lor- raine Motel exactly 205 feet and 3 inches away across Mulberry Street. Didn't Have Gunk The mn did not have with him the 30-cabiler pump-action Remington rifle and telescopic sight that killed Dr. King. It was 3:15 p.m. when he checked into the rooming house. Mrs. Bessie Brewer said she left the inside chain latch on when the man eknocked at the office door. "I showed him Rm. 5 and he said, 'This will be fine.' "1He said his name was Jojhn Willard and I wrote ',out a re- ceipt. He paid with a $20 bill. He reached into his right pants pocket, pulled it out and unfolded it with both hands." Police investigators took the re- ceipt carbon and the $20 to head- quarters. Six Feet Tall Mrs. Brewer said the man was as tall as her husband-about six feet. B. L. Reeves, a 74-year-old re- tired hotel clerk, watched the man as he talked to Mrs. Brewer. "I seen him when she checked dim in. He had dark hair and a pretty neat hair cut." ,Charlie Q. Stephens, in Rm. 6- between the room taken by Wil- lard and the bathroom, got aj better look. "He was clean shaven and had a long, sharp nose. He had nor- mal eyes and a square chin, thick hair at the front and receded on/ 3each side. "He was wearing a black dress suit, a white shirt, and a very dark or black, narrow tie. He combed his hair straight back." Mrs. Brewer said his features didn't register too much with her, but his neatness was noticeable. "He spoke like any other Memphian," she said. She said she never asks ques- tions. Rm. 4 is rented by Willie An- chutz, who works for a transfer company. Frank Brewer, husband of the landlady, said Anchutz saw the killer immediately after the shooting. "He said he saw him r nning odwnstairs c a r r y i n g something wrapped." Anchutz could not be reached.' Stephens said he heard the shot. Heard Explosion "I was in the kitchen working on a radio. When that explosion went off, it sounded like a Ger- man 88. I went to the door and walked out into the hall. I could see the man at the offset in the hall. He had in his hand some- thing wrapped in a newspaper." What the man who registered did between 3:15 p.m. and 6:01 p.m. is cloudy. He did not lay down on the bad. There is evidence he sat on the edge of it. He also moved around the room which has a well-worn wardrobe and a single window with yellow and green floral curtains. From his window, there is a clear view of Rm. 306 at the Lor- raine motel. It was Dr. King's room, but the window is at such an angle that it would be diffi- cult to shoot out of it. Between 3:15 p.m. and 5 p.m. no one recalls seeing "Willard." Went to Bathroom. Stephens said around 5 p.m. the, man went to the bathroom and, stayed about 25 minutes. Appar- ently, he now had the weapon. "Willie Anchutz - the man in Rm. 4-tried to get in the bath and then knocked on my door. I told him that it was the man who had rented Rm. 5. Anchutz returned to his room." There was bright sunshine at 6:01-24 minutes before sunset- when the kiler fired the rifle. The second - floor bathroom window holds a commanding view' of the Lorraine motel at 406 Mul- berry., There is evidence that the killer walked away from his crime in- stead of running. "I got a glimpse of him going away after he dropped the rifle in front of my place," said G. W. Canipe. owner of an amusement! firm. "He didn't seem to be run- ning." Canipe said the killer walked south on Main. A white Mustang with out-of- state license plates was parked to the north, in front of Jim's Grill. Saw Mustang Leave Lloyd Jowers, owner of the grill, said h noticed the Mustang had pulled away at 6:15 p.m. "I. didn't see who drove it away."~ If Dr. King had looked up and to the west from the balcony outside his room, he could easily have seen his assassin. He was looking down and talk- ing to friends in the courtyard below when struck. While the assassin obviously knew where Dr. King was staying and concealed himself to shoot the civil rights leader, he seems to have carelessly left behind many clues-fingerprints, the rifle and other items. of Public Health, University of Pitts- from side door of of burgh, "Consequences of Random Mat-C- ing in Man": Auditorium, School of MICHIGAN UNION STATE DRUGS Public.
