Ask for Wayne in 3. N12 'I By BILL DINNER Although the Michigan gym- nasts won't arrive in Tucson en masse the Wolverines top five will compete for individual crowns. The NCAA gymnastic cham- pionships, held for the first time at the University of Arizona, are comprised of the eight regional playoff winners fighting for the national championship as well as over 200 gymnasts vying for in- dividual honors. The highlights of the Michigan contingent are the Big Ten tram- poline champions. The tramp trio of Dave Jacobs, Wayne Miller, and George Huntzicker finished 1-2-3 in the Big Ten meet and all earned the right to compete in the nationals. Jacobs, only a junior, is de- fending NCAA tramp champ. In addition to his trampoline talent, Jacobs is also a past NCAA floor exercise winner, but a painful foot injury prevented him from taking the crown this year. Tramp Champ Until Jacobs came along, cap- tain Miller was the NCAA champ, winning the trampoline title in 1965, but he finished second last season behind Jacobs. Sophomore George Huntzicker will have more - trouble making third place. Although he has the ability he needs more experience in competing under pressure. Besides his trampoline chores Huntzicker earned., the, right to compete on the floor exercise, where he is not expected to fare too well against Big Ten winner Toby Towson as well as Dan Mill- man and Makoto Sakamoto. Threat Dale Hardt of Southern Illinois has scored in near or above nine all season and could prove a threat. In fact, Frank Bare, Di- rector of the U.S. Gymnastic Fed- eration thinks that Bare should beat Miller. Another top competitor is Dan Milman of California. In 1965-66 Millman was considered one of the best trampolinists in the world. He was injured last year but has made a brilliant come- back this season, capturing first on the trampoline and second on Unversity Charter Caledonian Airways FLY TO LONDON from DETROIT $230 Roundtrip May 20 to Aug. 19 Also, Wait Lists For: May 9 to June 19 June 27 to Aug. 22 CALL: 761-2348 5-7 P.M. The they couldn't devaluate the still rings in the Pacific Eight conference. Another sophomore (3 out of the 5 members are sophomores) on the team, Ron Rapper, easily captured the Big Ten title on the parallel bars, but he might find the competition at the NCAA slightly harder. His main competition will come from a sensational all-around champion Makoto Sakamoto of USC. Besides capturing the par- allel bars last year he finished; second in the all-around event losing by only .7 points. The fifth member of the team; is sophomore Sid Jenson. A mem- ber of the Canadian Pan Ameri-; can squad, he is a shoe-in to make the Canadian Pan American' squad. Jenson will compete oni both the parallel bars and on the long horse., In team competition, last year'sI champ, Southern Illinois, is thei pre-meet favorite according tos :Arizona Gymnastic coach Glenn Wilson. j '' ... WORSHIP ON PALM SUNDAY FIRST METHODIST CHURCH State and Huron Streets GOD'S SELF-DISCLOSURE. Sermon by Hoover Rupert 9:00 and 11 :15 A.M. DAVE JACOBS I Pushing Southern Illinois should be Big Ten representative Iowa and California. Cal's coach Hal Rey stated, "The Bears are ready and have the best talent ever." The Hawkeyes after a mid season slump came back with a 189.8 score to take the playoff. The team has depth in all events and should put on a good show. The battle for fourth should be between New Mexico and Temple University of Philadelphia. The Owls of Temple beat Penn State, an eight-time winner, by a scant .7 of a point to advance to the finals. s Join The Daily 4 1 f I.
