Weather conditions reminiscent of the "Great Blizzard Bowl" of 1950 forced the Wolverine grid- ders indoors for their opening scrimmage, yesterday afternoon. The inclement weather could not, however, put the damper on a spirited Michigan squad which spent, the afternoon banging heads in Yost Field House. The fact that no score was kept did not lessen the competitive edge of the seemingly inspired squad as testified to by the grid- dars' filthy mud-spattered faces and not infrequent rally of flash- ing fists. Head coach Bump Elliott was pleased by the desire shown by the team so early in the year. "The boys showed great enthu- siasm especially considering the weather. The team attitude has been real fine all week." It came as no surprise to any- one in the small crowd on hand to see the Blue team, paced by the backfield of Dennis 'Brown, Ron Johnson, Garvy Craw, and John Gabler, grind up the inex- F1 P A A r---------------- ----------- AUTHORIZED DEALER I think we'd like to see Europe from a VW wagon. DC Join The Dail Sports Staff RON JOHNSON perienced Yellow squad defense. At the same time the veteran Blue team defense stopped the Yellow running attack, anchored by senior Warren Sipp, dead in its tracks. Coach Elliott, however, had reason to be encouraged by the Yellow squad's freshman aerial combination of quarterback Don Moorhead to end Tom Mc-. Caffrey. While being generally happy with yesterday's opening scrim- mage, Elliott was not about to overemphasize the importance of the day's action. "You can't tell much from a workout like this, es- pecially the first one," he noted, "there's a lot of improvement to, be made but on the whole things went real well'today." In spite of the hard hitting the only injury was a very minor knee injury to linebacker Cecil Pryor. "I hope-this is an indication of our luck for the whole season," chimed Elliott. Could be your governor is stupid, but mine is a different kind of bird altogether. The governor is Feller Rocksinhead. The state is Old New York. Called Rocks by his aids and friends who won't stand for the formality of his first name, Feller, he is one of those charis- matic people whose name always comes up for the Gop president- ial nomination along with Harold Soften, Thomas E. Dooley and Richard Nixoff. But Rocks, like we said before, is different. While the others fight to their inevitable defeat and in general act like they want to be nominated, Rocks can't make up his mind. The trouble is, it's always seem- ed that a whole lot of people want a Rocks to be their President. The statement that the Vice President 2 would be easier for the Brand X party to beat in November than the governor was first made by ' the National Brand X party*. ** chairman in 1950. And at that time even Nixoff was no soft touch. v But Rocks didn't have the nerve, to go through and made this deal to get some of his pet liberal M planks in his own party's plat- FELLER ROCKSINHEAD form and fell asleep. In 1964 Rocks was the odds on choice to be his party's nominee except he got happy all of a sudden and couldn't wait. So, the country was stuck with Goldfarb to run against Jensen and picked one of the two eveils but lost in the long run. The New York divorcee 'remarried and slept again, while everybody admired his decision. In '68 Jensen made enough goof-ups to breathe life into the Gop, and the whole gang went at it once again. Once again Rocks didn't even make a fight of it. This is getting to be a little too much to take. Rocks, why don't you ever make a fight of it? "It's like this. Wen I was first elected governor, I split the Gop right down the middle. I can't help it because I'm charismatic and my own ideas don't groove with the party regulars. Anyway, for a long while I couldn't get anything done in the state. "Things were pretty bad until Brand X was also split right down the middle when Bobby Kenny was made Senator. Now, I could do anything I wanted if only my part was just a little less split-up than Kenny's, and he stayed in the nation's capital. "Eventually, my party found out that if they did things my way they could get things done, even if some of them still wouldn't follow me. ....."I got so much done that I figured at last it was my turn to.. be President. I was all set towipe out Nixoff when all of a sudden. . .Bobby decided he wanted to be President also. But if he left the.. state, the, Brand X'er would unsplit themselves and take over. So. . I felt obligated to gq back and try to mess things up a littte.. more........... "After all, that's what I do best." 4 HERE TODAY lK-- - - - -- - - - - - I~ I I!.
