P.M. By CINDY LEATHERMAN Why did Wayne Miller start trampolining? To keep in shape for diving, what else? He started diving when he was twelve, and never bounced until his freshman year in high school. At the age of sixteen, he won the AAU Nationals in trampolining, as well as theJunior Nationals in trampoline and diving. "I quit diving during that year because I became good in tram- polining all of a sudden, and it was something I could be creative in." Again and Again... The summer after he gradu- ated from high school, Miller won' the Nationals again, and again, and again, and again. It got to be monotonous. He was National Trampoline Champion six times as well as being the first person to capture all the "big six" titles in one year - the Midwest Open, the Big Ten, NCAA, AAU, Schuster Cup, and the World Champion- ship-all won when he was a sophomore. As unlikely as it seems, the tramp hasn't been his whole life. In high school, Miller played foot- ball and as a senior, was named to the All-Conference team in his "In trampolining you have to perform much the same as an ice skater; artistic value, appreciation, continuity, all these things must, be considered. Our team has a lot of different spectrums, and I have to try to s keep everyone happy, although lthis is impossible. Being the cap- tain is not a popularity contest." lAs far as post-graduate plans are concerned, Miller has definite Turned Trampolinist "In trampolining you have to perform much the same as an ice skater; artistic value, apprecia- tion, continuity, all these things must -be considered. I'd like to go into the physiological aspects of sport, the kinesiology of a per- formance," explains Miller. As far as records go, Miller has - had his share of championships,' but he is also the only person who can do a triple-twisting forward-; two-and-a-half (a trick which has appropriately been named the "Miller") Multiple Twisting Manipulation "All the records can be iiproved, the equipment's getting better, there are new training techniques, yet no one else has been able to do this trick. Perhaps this could be my doctoral thesis - explain- ing just what goes on during the multiple twisting manipulation," Miller states. Coach Loken has nothing but praise for Miller. "Wayne is a real master technician in the art of trampolining. He"s the outstand- ing multiple twisting somersaul- ter in the country and actually in the world. We'll all miss him very Just think how the Markley Fan Club will feel. :,,y home town of Lafayette, Louis- iana. He even had offers to play for a few colleges, but wisely ig- nored them. Deciding the trampoline was more his line, he chose Michigan as the place to pursue it. As cap- tain of the 1967-68 gymnastic team, Miller has had the great responsibility of uniting a diverse and very individualistic team. "I think of myself as a person try- ing to keep a good cohesive group. goals. "I would like to go into1 graduate school for physical edu-1 cation, not necessarily in a teach- ing-coaching capacity, but more4 in research-what motives a win- ner, why can one performer do a trick that no other can do. 1 Paid Political Announcement LEN QUENON Believes. SPORTS BULLETS: Baseball Split Feared By The Associated Press * MIAMI-With the American League expanding to 12 baseball teams next year through the addition of the Seattle and Kansas Ciy franchises, a near future clash looms if the American League splits down the middle while the National League stands pat. Skirting the issue momentarily in a pair of no decision sessions on expansion during an executive council meeting Wed- nesday, the two leagues announced afterwards they would meet separately next month to plot courses for -the 1969 season. The American League reportedly favors a two division set-up with a pennant playoff to determine its World Series represent- ative. An AL playoff could raise havoc with the final webk of a 10-team NL race unless some scheduling balance can be agreed upon. Or unless the National League which has voted to expand not later than 1970, makes its move next year to keep in step. ! BALTIMORE-The end of the National Basketball Associa- tion season brought the best news of all to the Baltimore Bullets. Rookie sensational Earl "The PEARL" Monroe won't be going into the Army, after all, because of physical reasons according to General Manager Buddy Jeanette. Monroe, a shoo-in for NBA rookie of the Year honors, scored 46 points against Philadelphia but fell nine short of becoming the fifth first-year player in league history to hit 2,0oo. * NEW YORK-Italy's Nino Benvenuti was named Fighter of the Month by Ring Magazine Thursday for his upset decision victory over Emile Griffith in their middleweight title bout in New York last March 4. #' 4 I I g THE ANNUAL Depart Sat., April 27 ONLY $18900 * Return Sat., May 4 $25.00 DEPOSIT BALANCE BEFORE APRIL 10 SP HL * ROUND TRIP AIR- DETROIT TO FREEPORT GRAND BAHAMA ISLAND VIA JET POWER ELECTRA WITH MEALS AND BEVERAGES EACH WAY. * SEVEN NIGHTS-- AT THE BEAUTIFUL BRAND NEW "HOLIDAY INN" (4 PER ROOM) RIGHT ON THE OCEAN - ONE MILE LONG WHITE SAND BEACH - SAILING "HOLIDAY INN DEEP SEA FISHING - SCUBA DIVING - TENNIS - GOLF GROUND TRANSPORTATION - AIRPORT TO HOTEL AND BACK TO AIRPORT * SPECIAL LOW MEAL PRICES - A CHOICE OF EATING PLACES * THREE MUSIC AND DANCING SPOTS IN YOUR HOTELAND SEVEN OTHERS A FEW STEPS AWAY.
