RENTALS 662-5671 By JOEL BLOCK Wolverine Coach Dave Strack should be doing razor blade com- mercials - he's the biggest "SPOILER" of them all. "There have been several times in the past few years when we've been in a position like Iowa was in Saturday. It was nice to get back at them for a change," said the Michigan mentor. His players had done the im- possible - swiping a game from Iowa in their own backyard. They might have done even more dam- age than that, because if the fa- vored Buckeyes triumph in to- night's play-off atrPurdue, Coach Ralph Miller and his boys will Automatic Stick Shif * f be left holding a sliced-up champ- ionship and not much else. In the past two years, the Hawk- eyes had only lost two games at home, 'one of them by one point in three overtimes. The seats of the field house come right up to the basketball court and it's about as peaceful there as a Da Nang foxhole. "Oh, they were in a pretty fes- tive mood at first," Strack remem- bered of the crowd, "but they be- gan to get a little apprehensive when we took our big lead." The Wolverines held a 16 point advantage at one point during the first half, and after it was chopped to eight by halftime, they brought it up to 16 again in the second stanza. Stunned "They were stunned at the end," remarked Strack, "when the Hawkeyes couldn't pull it out." Iowa's last abortive shot, a % floor length lob shot by Sam Wil- liams, would have made a nice fairytale out of the game, but Sam's radar was a hair off target and the ball bounced harmlessly off the back rim. "I don't think the basket would have counted even if the ball had gone in," Strack said, "but it sure caught my breath." The Wolverines were high Sat- VOTE DAMM CON-CON After o these many years our humble little bug has gone automatic. Gone is the clutch. Gone is ihe'wifely whine, "It's cute, but I can't drive it." Ken Maxey, 5'9" junior guard, will be captain of next year's basketball squad, it wasyan- nounced. yesterday. Maxey, a speedball starter out of Carver High School in Chicago, aver- aged 7.7 points a game this year. He replaces senior Jim Pitts asj captain of a Wolverine team which finished the season tied for sixth in the Big Ten race with a 11-13 overall record. Maxey should have plenty of help next year as Pitts is the only letterman Michigan will lose this year by graduation. urday night, and it took only the trip to Iowa City to make them .so. "We weren't too happy about the comment they made about how much better conditioned they were We knew we gave them an easy win here in Ann Arbor, (99-86), and we didn't want to do it again," Strack explained. Lay-Up The Wolverine attack sported a shot which they haven't used too much this season-the lay-up. The Wolverines empoyed their regu- lar plays, but this game they ran them to perfection. "We were able to score when- ever we wanted to at the begin- ning of the game," Strack claim- ed. "Pitts was leaving his man in the nickle seats on some of the plays." Strack added, "It's not just that we were getting more close- in shots, but that we weren't miss- ing them like we have in the past." The Wolverine second half mar- gin, which peaked at 16, dwindled to almost nothing at the end of the game. Why? Strack gives a coupleof very good reasons. Rudy's Ankle "Jim Pitts had four fouls on him even before the first half was over. Then we lost Rudy Tomjian- ovich early in the second half." Tomjanovich left the court on a stretcher with a badly injured ankle. He was a victim of a com- mon baketball maneuver called the 'switch.' "Kenny Maxey was checking off on Sam Williams and I switched off my man to help out," said Purdue Hosts Iowa-OSU Title Clash LAFAYETTE ()--The Big ten's first basketball playoff since 1908, Iowa vesus Ohio State on Purdue's neutral floor tonight, should be a shoot-'em-up showdown. Ohio State's Buckeyes hit 481 of 933 field goal attempts during the regular conference season for a league record average of 51.6 per cent. Iowa averaged under 45 per cent but has the top individual scorer still in business in the league - 25.6 point average Sam Williams. He was second only to Purdue's Rick Mountduring the regular campaign. Iowa's Hawkeyes apparently had the Big Ten crown and NCAA tourney berth locked up going into a home game with the Wol- verines last Saturday, but Mich- igan won 71-70, and knocked Iowa into a 10-4 league tie with Ohio State. Under the old conference rule, the NCAA bid would go to the team which hadn't been in the tourney for the longest time, which would be Iowa. But Iowa Coach Ralph Miller conceded in Iowa. City yesterday that the new playoff plan is the only fair way to do it. At the same time, Miller said, "I really think Ohio State is in a great position. They haven't had any worries for a week and we've been up, down and around the horn." The Big Ten berth in the Na- tional Collegiate tourney is highly coveted because the conference leads all others in NCAA success- es over 28 years of competition. The Big Ten has won 67.5 per cent of its games in the tourney and produced four teams for the national finals. I SPRING SPECIAL! William St. Tomjanovich yesterday. "I went up to block Sam's shot and when I came down I tripped over Mofaxey and hit the ground." But Tomjanovich doesn't antici- pate much trouble from the ankle. "I went down to see the doctor for an x-ray. I'm waiting now for the results. I was on crutches Sun- day but I can walk on it now. I think it's OK." Stewart and Sullivan With Tomjanovich on a stretcher and Pitts hindered by four fouls, rebounding duties fell to Dennis Stewart and Bob Sullivan. The two handled the job capably as Michi- gan ended up with a 37-33 re- bounding edge for the game. "Stewart is going to the boards Howard Cooper Volkswagen INC. 2575 So. "Sullivan also made a lot bf fine plays and I don't think his missed free throws de- tracted from his over-all per- formance." Strack didn't stop with his praises. "Kenny Maxey did a great job on Williams when Pitts left the court after his fourth foul; it was about the best defensive job all year on Sam." Looking Back Looking back at the game Strack commented, "Iowa had everything going for them. I know Miller said his boys didn't hustle for him, but that's not true, they hustled plenty." The Iowa win, coupled with vic- tories over Minnesota, Purdue, and Northwestern give the Wolverines a streak they can carry into next year. Strack said they proved to themselves they have the talent to win and predicted, "We'll be in contention next year." Big Ten Standings W L Pet. 1 I " Iowa 10.
