After a joint meeting of the conference athletic directors and faculty representatives Commis- sioner Bill Reed said the Big Ten reaffirmed its legislation barring freshmen from any kind of var- sity competition. Reed said there was no formal discussion at the session of the recent charges by The Michigan Daily that athletes at Michigan and Michigan State, were receiv- ing fringe benefits, including free theatre passes and discounts at retail stores. "I'm not making any report at this time, but I will talk over the situation with the faculty repre- sentatives Friday," Reed said. Similar demands were dispatched to other members of the IOC by Konstantin Andrianov, the Soviet news agency Tass reported yesterday. The Soviet Olympic Committee adopted a resolution, saying: "If the International Olympic Committee refuses to con- vene an emergency. session and insists on its decision about South Africa, the USSR Olympic Committee will be impelled to reconsider the question of participation of Soviet sportsmen in the Summer Olympics in 1968.", Thirty-two African nations and some ten others already have announced they will refuse to send athletes to the Mexico City Games Oct. 12-27 if last month's IOC decision readmitting South Africa is permitted to stand, " HOUSTON (P) - The top ranked University of Hous- ton basketball team has lost the services of its statting guard in the upcoming NCAA playoffs. George Reynolds was de- clared ineligible Wednesday for post-season games. Reynolds' problem stems from the number of hours ac- cepted by Houston when the 6-4 playmaker transferred last fall from Imperial Valley Junior College. The school accepted less than the 48 required and this is the reason he will be ineligible. "Although there was no question about his eligibility for regular season play the number of semester hours accepted when he transferred will not permit him to play in the national tournament," the school announcement stated. investigation at the two schools for the past 3% weeks. Reed pointed out that the NCAA at its last annual meeting voted that freshmen could compete in NCAA national championships. This opened the door for fresh- ment competition on varsity teams in such sports as track baseball, wrestling, swimming and other sports exclusive of football and basketball. Some conferences, Reed said, have already approved freshmen competition in the minor sports and others plan to do so a year from now. "We will work with other op- ponents of the NCAA frosh rule to seek its appeal at the 1969 NCAA meeting," Reed said. The joint director and factulty representative group also went on record in opposition to any na- tional championship football play- off, which has been recommended by some coaches, including Duffy Daugherty of Michigan State. Other action taken at the meet- ing included: Approval of an August 30 start of football practice in compliance with a new NCAA rule. Final approval of a one-year extension of freshman intercol- legiate competition through the 1968-1969 school year. For the past two years the conference experimented with such a pro- gram, including two football games and three basketball games on an intercollegiate basis.
