The Buckeyes began con- verting free throws just as the, Wolverines started missing them. Buckeye Jody Finney moved in for a lay up with three minutes left to play to tie the score 85- 85. Stewart tossed in a thirty footer but missed an opportunity to make a three point, play. Then Craig Barclay, a Buckeye sub, calmly dropped in two foul shots and Finney added a three point play to make it 91-87. Maxey countered with a jump- er for the Wolverines but Sulli- van, with an opportunity to tie, could only convert one of two foul shots. With 35 seconds left Hosket put in a cripple,. the technical was called on the crwd and two meaningless scores were exchang- ed to eiifd the game, 95-92, MICHIGAN'S DENNIS STEWART lets fly for two of his game- leading total of 32 points over the outstretched arm of Buckeye star Bill Hosket. Frosh Hustle Past Baby Bucks, 83=78 ,#1 Mathem atic Students By PHIL BROWN Michigan's freshman basketball+ team used a tenacious man-to- man defense and steady foul shooting to defeat Ohio State's yearlings 83-78, in a prelude to yesterday's varsity confrontation. "We felt that the boys played very well," grinned assistant coach Dick Honig after the win. "We ran our offense better than we had ex- pected we could."; Led by Dan Fife's 26 points and the rebounding of Ton Lundstedt and Rod Ford, the junior Wolver- ines took a 40-35 halftime lead and built it to a ten point advantage early in the second frame. Honig credited reserve guard Rex Emerick's appearance late in the first period for Michigan's in- termission lead. "Emerick really picked us up," he noted. The backcourt sub toss- ed in three quick baskets, then added three more in the second half for a 12 point total. ,I guess the real key was our bench," reflected the coach. "Bob Mull, Bob Wilson, and Emerick all did well when we needed help." But it was the free throw shoot- ing of Fife and Ford that put the 'final damper on the Buckeye frosh attack. The pair took advantage of 25 personal, called on Ohio State (three Bucks fouled out) to record 19 charity tosses. Ford's nine free throws helped boost his game total to 19 in the % Wolverines' first intercollegiate contest. The taller Buckeye squad was unable to capitalize on its height advantage, grabbing only 37 re- bounds to the Wolverines' 44.
