Willis J Abbott, '84, has been appoint- ed chief of the press bureau of the Democratic National committee. His rise since ieaving college has been rap- id. After leaving here, he went into journalism in Kansas City. Later he became manager of the Chicago Timero Leaving there he wa an editorial writer on the New York Journal during the last campaign. Soon afterhe Subject for the "Good Gocernment Club Prize." Near the close of the last academic year the sum of $500 was given by the Good Government club to the Regents of the University, the income of which was to be used as a prize for the en- couragement of the study of questions pertaining to good government, The management of this prize was intrusted to a committee composed of the Head of the Department of Political Ecot- omy, the Dean of the Law School, and the Dean of the Literary Department. It is upon th authority of this comit- tee that the following statement is made: For the academic year 1899-1900 the income of $500 for one year will be paid as a prize for the best essay upon the following subject: "The Functions of Mayor in Municipal Government What Are They and What Should They Be?" Any student of good standing, regu larly enrolled in the University of Michigan may become a competitor for this prize All essays submitted in competition for this prize must be in hands of the chairman of the committee on or be- fore the first of May, 1900. The prize will be awarded on the fifteenth of t month following. Each essay must be signed by a fictitious name and accomt, panied by a sealed envelope in which, besides the name signed, must be stated the correct name and address of the contestant, Any inquiries respecting this matter may be submitted to Professor Adams, chairman of the committee.
