McDOUGALL There will be a thorough "house cleaning" in the machine shop of the engineering laboratory during the com- ing week. The occasion is to make room for some new machinerywhich is to arrive in a shrt time. The machinery now in the shop is being rear anged the small lathes and all other light machinery is being placed in the south end and the heavy machinery will occupy the north end-. By this arrangement, there will b5- left a vacant space in the centre of the shop which will be used for erecting. The long work bench has been moved from the east side of the shop to the erecting floor. The new machines to be placed in the shop a e a Landis Universal Grind- ing Machine, Kearney & Trecker Mill- ing Machine, National Bolt and Nu Threading Machine, and a Flather Lather, 12 feet long and 17 inches wide, with special attachments, i, e, taper attachment and compound rest. Grinding is an entirely new process in machine shop practice by means of which greater accuracy of work is ob- tained, as for instance hardened steel or other metals difficult to operate upon are readily handled by this machine. The new Milling Machine has been pur- chased principally to prepare material for testing purposes in the engineering laboratory. , The Lathe embodies many new itn- povements to the shop. With these valuable additions the engineering de- partment is enabled to offer a much better course in machine shop practice than it has heretofore. Deal Mutes Football Plaers. The Nation's Capital claims probably the most peculiar football team in the country. The team's signals are given without the utterance of a word or sound, although they are of the most approved and complex kind. All sig- rnalling is done by motions of the hands, arms and head. The team is composed entirely of deaf and dumb mutes, organized at the Government Institute for the Deaf and Dumb, known as Gallaudet College. The students are especially fond of athletics, and always turn out strong teams in all branches of sports under- taken. The football team is an ex- ceptionally strong eleven this year and would prove very formidable against any college team it might meet outside of the "big four." THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN DAILY. All Freshmen vs. Normals. This afternoon at the Athletic Field the Al- Freshmen will line up against the team from the State Normal. The teams, judging from previous games, will be very evenly matched. The All Fresh have been having regular plac- tice, are in good shape and are confi- dent of making a good showing against their opponents if not winning. The field will undoubtedly be slippery afte: the rain, but this will hamper both sides alike. Owing to the extremely low admission and also to the fact that telegraphic reports will be given re- garding the progaess of Michigan-Illi- nois game, there will be a large crowd in attendance. Marine Engineering. A course in marine engineering and naval architecture has been established in the engineering depa-tment. The course is a graduate one requiring five years' residence at the University. The studies for the first three and one-hale years are the same as those in the reg- ular engineering courses. Th special work begins the second semester of the senior year and continues through the fifth year. At the end of the fourth year th' student receives the degree of bachelor or science in engineering, and A High Standard of merit in clothes making is gained only by Continuous Effort. And so it is in clothes dealing. It re- quires continuous effort on our part to select that which is best from, the stocks of the many clothes makers in this country. STEIN BLOCH CLOTHING is without question the finest pro- duced and is ahead in every respect of the average made-to-order garments- at about one-half the price. It is that kind of clothing which the best dressers are looking for, and realizing this fact we have this season purchased an unusual Large Stock of Stein Bloch Suits and Overcoats and are in position to fit all shapes and forms from our magnificent line of this high grade make. A deering rotary engine of about twenty-five horse power has been re- ceived at the mechanical laboratory for experimental purposes. The ma chine will be subjected to a series of tests extending over about two months' time, during which it will be run with different pressures of steam and dif- ferent loads. The exact amount of steam required to operate it under tshe different conditions will be tfound by measurement. The object of the tests is to determine the exact horse power at the engine, else conditions under whici it can be most successfully run, and whether it can be made a com- mercial success.
