FUNDS FOR INVESTIGATION f@f@f@fO4f4f4f9f9fO®+ f94 Two grants have recently been made from funds for the advancement of science to Henry C. Carhart, pro- fessor of physics and director of the physical laboratory of the University 213 SOUTH L4AIN ST of Michigan. The first was made by the trustees of the Elizabeth Thom-- r r i lJ , - Y 1, i- ,t f Y ,, i- e , r t f s e - s t e Y Y Electrochemical Society, at Washing- ton, D. C. The second grant was made by the Carnegie Instution, of Washington, for the determination in absolute measure of the electromotive force of Clark and Cadmium Standard Cells, and for the determination of the electrochemi- cal equivalent of silver. The Daily is in receipt of the fol- lowing communication from Prof. Pat- tengill: To the Editor of the Michigan Daily: The Eligibility Committee of the Board of Control find on investigation that Mr. Schule is ineligible to com- pete for Michigan in intercollegiate contests, because he had under the Conference Rules already competed four years. When Mr. Schule came before the committee he said he had competed but three years. His competition in the fourth year consisted in taking part in one indoor meet, and in the relay races at Philadelphia. Mr. Schule declares that he supposed that indoor meets did not count toward the four years. It was of course his duty to inform the Committee of the facts and let then decide. *His misinterpre- tation of the rules has led to much embarrasement both to him and to the Committee. He was not eligible to compete in either the meet with the First Regiment or the one with Cor- nell, but was eligible to compete at Philadelphia. A. H. PATTENGILL. GOSSIP OF COLLEGES. Leland Stanford has decided to send a track team consisting of eight men to compete at Chicago, June 4, in the Western conference meet. The events they will be represented in are the pole vault, high jump, broad jump, shot put, 220 and 440 yard dash. and the 880 yard and mile runs. Dole, the pole vaulter, has cleared 11 feet, 1.32 inches and Hyde, the shot putter, has a record of over 46 feet. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology has been combined with Harvard University. However, no radical changes in the policy of the institution will be made by Harvard. The sentiment at the "Tech." was much against the merger. At Wisconsin someone carelessly left a faucet running on the top floor of the physics building, and over Sun- day the entire building was flooded. The damage to instruments will be over $1,000. Harvard won the tenth annual de- bate with Princeton recently. The question was: "Resolved, That laws be passed compelling the management of an industry to sell its produce at reasonable rates and without discrim- ination." Harvard took the negative side of the question. WARM CONTEST IN C. C. C. One . of the hottest political con- tests of the year is being waged in the Cross Country Club. A determined movement is being made against ma- chine politicsand the result is very much in doubt., The election occurs tomorrow morning. So far as can be observed neither side has any notice- able advantage. lennis Rackets Perfect Balance. Best White Ash frames. Clearest and Best Quality Gut Stringing.
