April 2.-Fencing Tournament. Tomorrow night Michigan meets Wisconsin in a blard strugglo for su- premacy in debate. Our represent- tives will find a strong team to de- feat, for Wisconsin is sending one of the best trio of debaters in several years. The duty of the student body in re- spect to the debate is obvious, for a large audience is absolutely necessary to make this debate a success. The oratorical board is in need of funds to make up a deficit and for this rea- son is charging a small admission fee. Those are two important reasons for the student body to attend the debate. Oratory and debating have been for years very strong in the University of Michigan. Under the able instruc- tion of Professor Trueblood our teams have won in debate as skillfully and thoroughly as our foot ball teams. In the inter-collegiate oratorical con- tests for the past few years Michigan representatives have always stood high. . Pride for our records in debating, and loyalty to every department of University activity, should call out a large number of the students for this supreme debating contest of the year. No team can win alone, and the in- spiring sight of a large number of their fellow classmates will do much to encourage the three debaters who will strive to maintain our standing in debate. The Huron river is now higher than at any time this year and the low lands are flooded. Two dams have been swept away, causing considera- ble damage. Many students are mak- ing pilgrimages to the "peaceful Hu- ron" these days, to see it roar along its course. Probably they contrast the present condition of that usually placid stream, with its gentle ripples on some eventful moonlight night last summer. GOSSIP OF THE COLLEGES. The fraternities at Iowa are plan- ning to give a big barbecue some time this spring. A couple of oxen will be roasted and cider apple, etc., will be served. The sororities nay possibly be invited to attend. The extension department of the University of Chicago has engaged four noted foreigners to deliver a series of lectures at the university. The four men are, Prof. Hugo Devries, director of Botanical Gardens, Amster- dam, who will lecture on "The Muta- tion Theory and the Origin of Species;" Prof. John Mohaffy, Univer- sity of Dublin, lecturer on "Political Science;" Prof. Herbert H. Turner, Oxford University, lecturer on "As- tronomy;" Prof. Eugene Philoppovich, University of Vienna, lecturer on "Po- litical Economy." The students at Wisconsin are a factor in politics at Madison. In two wards the student vote is the control- ing power and politicians are consult- ing the students before putting any candidates in nomination. The University girls at Minnesota have organized an orchestra. NOTICE '06 LAW CLASS. There will be a class meeting at 1:30 p. i., Thursday, March 24, in room C. to consider severa imiort ait class matters. The time for thk omtt- ination and balloting for officers of the Oratorical association must among other things, be decided upon, and a full attendance is desired. RUDIN, Pres.
