- *c *af LJ. T ait . Published Daily (Sundays excepted) during the Collee ear, by THE U. OF M. INDEPENDENT ASSOCIATION rt. "nau. "uso Nou... WE have received two articles- one, some verses upon foot-ball, and the other, a "kick" upon the manner in which the eleven is being trained. Neither of these communications are signed, and of course we cannot publish them. It is a well-known rule that all communications must be signed, not necessarily for publi- cation but merely as an evidence of good faith. We cannot publish the "poem,'' because it is not our pol- icy to fill our columns with verse. We are not a humorous paper either, but simply a newspaper, and we en- deavor to cover the entire field of college news as completely as is possible with the proper attention to studies. Poor proof-reading is responsible for two misleading sttements in our account of Mionday's foot-ball gansie with Olivet. In commenting upon Gilbert's brutal slugging, We were made to say that, "He continually befed and bucked Michigan's men when down.'' It should have read, He continnually heeled and kicked Michigan's men when down." The other error made us say, "In both games the brutal tactics were com- mented upon by Michigan's oppon- ponents." This gives an entirely erroneous impression, and might convey the mearing that Michigan's brutal tactics, were commented up- on by Albion and Olivet. It should have read, "In both games, the brutal tactics were commenced by Michigan's opponents." These mistakes are very humiliating to us, and we trust our readers will over- look them.- ALTHOUGH but a single day inter- venedbetween the Albion and Oh- vet games, and that day Sunday, Michigan's team work showed great improvement. The eleven is begin-. ning to show the result of Craw- ford's coaching. The men are be- coming more familiar with the signs. Three things must be.learned before the season is far advanced: (r), to tackle low; (2), how to stop a short rush; (3), how to protect a runner when passing around the ends. There.is one thing that great-. ly needs to be impressed upon the players. In a game, the captain should be the only one to tall. No reason need be advanced, At.O0N- vet twenty-two men were talking at the same time, and 'they ell knew THE U. OF just how it occurred, and they were all positive thattheir eleven was en- titled to the advantage of the ref- eree's or umpire's ruling. The game should be played qietly. No player, no matter how able, can talk and.pay attention to the game at the same time. Then again these wise words of probably the greatest foot- ball authority in the country, should be observed: " No captain, who is himself a player, can or ought to undertake the general coaching of his team, for two reasons: . In thte first place, lie can never study them dispassionately from all sides and come to a fair conclusion as to just what they are capable of; and in the second place, he cannot both play and coach either to his own advant- age or that of his team.'' It would be scarcely proer, ordinarily, for us to make these observations, but the team has been so slow to con- prehend its duty in the matter that its shortcomings need public cor- rection.
