WE cannot condemn too strongly the practice which prevails among the students who attend the foot- ball games, of encroaching upon the field while the game is in progress. If an improvement in this respect is not shown at the next game upon the home grounds, the management will feel compelled to exclude the spectators entirely from the field, and confine them to the grand stand. We trust that this will not be neces- sary. Students are not sheep, and if a few thoughtless ones rush upon the field and impede the players, as they did on Saturday, the spectators have it in their power to call them back and not follow them upon the field. WE may be accused of harping on a worn-out subject, but we are satis- fied that we are justified in doing so. We can hardly pick up an exchange without reading of some magnificent gift being made to one of our sister universities, while we can pick up dozens of them and not find any gift of $250,000 or $500,000 to our own-the U. of M. Why this is, we cannot tell, unless it is for one of two reasons. Either our alumni are poor, which hardly seems to be the case, or else they regard their Alma Mater as a state institution support- ed by the state, which can worry along without any outside help. We are inclined to think the latter is the case, and to such we would say that the University can never have too solid a foundation. Every dollar added to its revenue will increase its facilities for providing knowledge, and help make it the grandest insti- tution of learning in America. Our give a small sum toward its advance- ment, as a few such sums rapidly count up and soom make large ones. If our alumni after getting out into the world and enjoying the reward reaped from the advantages of old U. of M. would only think how niuch they are indebted to it, and would grant to it a small sum as a recompense, the condition of the University would be materially ad- vanced and in a few years we could easily claim to be THE University of America.
