Ie II. of 3 Waip. PRICE, THREE CENTS. VOL. II.-No. 15. UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 16, 1891. THE GIRLS SAY NO. "Co-ed's" Society a Rare Article at Wesleyan College. Wesleyan University has a lively sensation, and the young women students are freely expressing their minds regarding a new order from the college authorities. Wesleyan has many pleasant young men among its students, and the girls have found them agreeable companions in their hours of leisure. The young gentle- men have been permitted hot only to escort the girls to entertainments and social gatherings under the eye of a chaperon, but also to call upon them at their dormitory, which in the slang of the institution is known as "the roost." President Raymond recently con- ceived the.idea that the calls of the young gentlemen should be systema- tized and brought under college reg- ulations. The matter was talked over by the faculty, and it was con- cluded that some plan should be adopted whereby the president might know which of the young gentlemen were frequenting "the roost" and which of the young ladies were the special attractions to them. The outcome of the affair was that a gen- eral restriction has been placed upon calls. The new rule requires the filling out of a card in this form: MIDDLETOWN, COaN......,1891. :Signature of cater .......... Residence...... Evening...... Hoar Gentlemen are requested to ber in mind the foltowing facts, 1. The ladies do not receive later than ten oelock. 2. The ladies desire caller to conform to his card. Not transferable. Name of lady ......--. The members of the faculty claim that the use of these cards will ope- rate advantageously in several ways. They can ascertain whether certain students are calling too frequently; whether it is advisable on account of the personal character of any of them to shut off the privilege, and also to avert the inconvenience of a young lady having too many callers in an evening. A young gentleman can hereafter obtain only one card a week, on which is designated the evening he may call. Each young lady may receive not exceeding three evenings in a week, and the faculty' it is understood, will favor a differ- ent caller for each evening rather than to permit a fair student's "best young man"to monopolize her entire three evenings. Neither the young ladies nor the young gentlemen have objected to the chaperon system, but they are agreed in protesting against Presi- dent Raymond's new rule as an uncalled for interference with their individual rights and privileges.
