To DlivE the library lighted throughout with electricity would be infinitely better than the present system of gas. It can be done with but little additional expenseand the result would be well worth the extra expenditure. The chief difficulty is the interference of class work in the physical laboratory. Perhaps this may be remedied in some way. It is certain that the change would be appreciated by all those who reg- ularly attend the reading room. Notesfrom the Physical Laboratory -The Library May be Lighted by Electricity. In an interview with one of the assistants in the physical laboratory, a number of interesting facts were learned which are not generally known, and which may be of inter- est. During the last three or four years the attendance in this depart- ment, and especially in the school of electrical engineering, has in- creased to such an extent that facili- ties for their accommodation have been somewhat meager. The intro- duction of new apparatus has obvi- ated this difficulty, and we now have one of the most thoroughly equipped physical laboratories in the west. Recently a new Slattery alternating current dynamo of 200 incandescent light power has been purchased, and is now being set up on the ground floor. It was intended at first to be used solely for experimental pur- poses, but the idea of lighting the library has been seriously consid- ered. It is estimated that 150 in- candescent lights would be amply sufficient. The only thing in the way isathetcoat of. twohadditional men, and the fact that the dynamo will be in use until five o'clock, while the library must be lighted earlier during the fall and winter months. It seems as if this obsta- cle might be surmounted for the benefits are obvious. A fine horizontal Russel engine has been purchased from the Russel Engine Co., Massilon, Ohio, and is en route. It is capable of 70-horse power, and is intended to run the dynamo. A Deci-Ampere, a Deki-Ampere, a Ballistic Galvanometer, and a Sec- ometer have been added to the gen- eral apparatus, and several instru- menls of minor importance are on the wey. Angell's Visits. ichligan is very proud. Last year she walked about with a wreath of laurel on her co-educational brow, worn because her university had more students than any other col- lege in America. This year the records show nearly 2,800 enrolled, or 400 more than the total of last year. Of these 40o are women, and every department shows a marked advance. Is this great progress due to the president of the University ? Can Ann Arbor entertain an Angell not unawares and fail to meet a well- merited reward? Happy the uni- versity where Angell's visits are of daily occurance.-From Kate Field's Washington. BUSINESS LOCALS. iNoices inserted in this column at the rate of 10 cents per liae.
