WHAT has become of the chess club which was so active last year ? There are surely enough students who play chess to make a University chess. club permanent and active. The game of chess just as truly trains the mind as does the study of mathematics. Resides it is in the nature of recreation, and gives profit.- able diversion to the tired brain. Let some one take the initiative and build up a clubrepresentative of the University, such as the eastern col- leges possess. A Great Chancellor. By special request, Mr. High, special lecturer to the graduate laws, will deliver a public lecture in the law lecture room this afternoon. His subject will be "A Great Chan- cellor, being a review of the life of Lord Eldon. Last year, while Mr. High was here, he gave a very inter- esting lecture on Thomas Erskine, and all who heard his interesting address on "A Great Advocate" will desire to hear his lecture on 'A Great Chancellor.' In one of your issues of last week, an editorial appeared condemning the freshman class for having put no foot-ball team in the field. The following may be a partial explana- tion of this failure: A large num- ber of the freshmen take mathe- matics r, in which there are only two sections, from 4 to 5 and from 5 to 6. Thus thosetetakingr ths course, who would like to play foot- ball, are compelled to lose half the time of practice.
