Ij II. of. . WII. VOL. II.-No. 45. UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 1891. 1PRICE, THREE CENTS. A Glimpse of Life at Northwestern. The following was received by one of the editors of the DAILY, from a former student of the U. of M. As it may be of interest to our readers, we publish it: "1 You have probably heard of the new order of things that has been introduced here under Dr. Roger's supervision. low he has changed the curriculum and introduced an elective course similar to that of the eastern col- leges, and in fact has given a new and broader field of knowledge to the students. The whole atmos- phere is changed. The students feel this and wishing to express their gratitude to their president, Dr. Rogers, they gave him a grand re- ception in Chicago, on the evening of Nov. 13, at the Grand Pacific hotel. There were about a thousand guests present, representing the diff- erent departments both in the city and at Evanston. Perhaps the most pleasing feature of the reception; doubtless the most Uleasing at any rate to the gentlemen, was the charming presence of the Fem. Seni. (Woman's College) girls under es- cort or chaperons. The beauty, quiet dignity, womanly grace and sweetness of Evanston girls, secures their position in the first society. Here a girl is not judged by her wealth, her dress,or even her brains, but by her own sweet disposition as shown by her social influence. I might mention Miss Fannie Alabas- ter, known to many of the residents of Ann Arbor, as perhaps the fair- est of the fair. 't'here were present besides Dr. and Mrs. Rogers, the members of the faculty, and trus- tees of the university, many men of rank and position in Chicago, and Miss Emily Huntington Miller, the new dean of the Woman's College. There was nusic, supper and dancing. Coming home on the train the air was made melodious with college songs, to the discomfiture of the in- different passengers. There are more advantages for a girl to de- velop into true womanhood where there is special provision made for her as here: At Northwestern she is not dubbed co-ed. The fraternity element is strong, so strong that the college is second to the faternity.
