"Old" Jim Hill, the night watchman of the U. of M., was coxswain of the ship Tyler in the civil war. when Rear Admiral Dewey was a 'ieutenant in command of the Mississippi under Ad- miral Porter. The old salt never misses an opportunity to praise the gallant commander. He was with him at Port Hudson, when the Mississippi was blown up by a torpedo, and says that Admiral Dewey was the last man to leave the sinking ship, and then only as the waters engulfed her. He always showed great coolness in action and never hesitated to speak a kindly word to the common seaman. In his treat- ment of his men he was always thought- ful, yet demanded strictest obedience.
