The Detroit Journal is responsible for the statement that Charles Baird has been appointed graduate director of athletics at the University of Michigan, and that he is to take his place at the head of the Athletic Association of the University next September, at the be- ginning of the schooi year. The ap- pointment of Mr. Baird is a recognition of his efficient services in handling athletic events at Ann Arbor, when he was a student in the class of '95.11e was five years a director and secretary of the Students' Athletic Association while in school, and in the years of '93, '94 and '95 was football manager. The three years of his management of the football team were the most suc- cessful years in the records of football at Ann Arbor. He will have the power of deciding the policies to be pursued in each branch, the selection of coaches and trainers, and the making of sched- uses for games. One reason for this is the interest which every member has taken SMITH, STURGEON & CO., in the club. The play at each meeting has been close and exciting and a large number have been present at each eve- ning's play. The prospects for a very fnourishing club next year are excellent. The club now proposes to give a big banquet, at which, besides the men- bers of the home club, members of out- side clubs will be invited. Members of Detroit, Toledo, Ypsilanti, Jackson and Grand Rapids clubs will probably be present. It is expected that about sixty of the home club will attend. The plan is to hold a tournament in the early part of the evening at the club's parlors in Nichol's Hall. Afterwards the play- ers will adjourn to Prettymoan's, ihere the banquet proper will be teld. Toasts will be given by some of the visitors and by members of the home club. The club desires to make the affair one of the events of the college year, and are bending every preparation to such an end.
