The pamphlets of minor 'mportance
that have been classified and bound in
volumes are on a great variety of sub-
jects, as the "Public Lands," "Mexican
War," "Trade and Commerce, ""The
'Tariff," "The Finances," "Party Pol-
itics," "Slavery,"' "The Navy," "A Pa-
rific Railroad," "Patents," "The Civil
War," etc., etc.
I have made special mention of a few
of those that seem to me of the most
interest, but I int by no means confi-
dent that a better selection cotld not
be made. I am sure, however, that on
account of the times in which they were
produced and the subjects of which
they treat they form a collection of the
greatest value, and ane which it would
be hard to duplicate.
Gov. Felch's bequest also adds to our
scanty stock of manuscript. The record
of the work of the board of commis-
sioners for the settlement of the land
claims in California for the time he
was a member of it (1852-1856) appears
in five folio volumes, viz:
"Opinions of the Board," three v i-
umes, pages 365, 557 and 450.
"Decisions of the Board,"' two vul-
umes, pages 141 and 211.
The writing in these volutmes is by
several hands, but is generally ood and
easily read. I do nat know in what
other shape these records exist, but its
no other shape can they have more
authority, and their importance is
therefore great.
A more interesting document yet is
the following:
"Journal of a tour to and fro over-
land from San Miguel de, Orcasitas
Sonora, to the bay of San Francisco,
Cal.,, in the years 1775-6." By Padre
Fray Pedro Font, Neilson script, Mon-
terey, Cal.,, 1854.
This journal is one of the important
authorities for the early history of Cal-
ifornia. It is referred to by Humboldt
and by Schoolcraft. Herbert Bancroft
makes frequent reference to it in his
"History of California" On page 259

can be restored by a muslin backing.
The script of the volume is beautiful
and as easily read as print.

ties in Boston.

Field papers, relating to the apying of
the first Atlantic cable, has now be-
come the property of the Nationail Mtu-
seum in Washington.
