MACK &'CO. New Rules in Athletics. Last Friday forenoon a conference of representatives of the seven lending colleges of the west set at the Ohi- cago Beach Hotel. The meeting was called by Professor Stagg,. and he was i the choir during the session. Pro- fessor Knowlton, of the University of Michigan ncted as secretary. It was the longest conference in the history of the association and lasted for over nine hours. At the close it was de- cided to 'have an annual ieeting of the lyoard in Chicago every year tabout Thanksgiving day. Besides the committee to improve tho football rules a comniittee consisting of Professor J. Scott Clark, Professor J. C. Knowlton and Professor C. A. Waldo was appointed to detertoine the umeaning of the term "college student." 'The colleges were represented as fol- lows: trofessor J. E. Woodbridge, Univer- si ty of Minnesota. Professor H. H. Everett, University of Illinois. Professor J. C. Knowlton, University of Michigan. tProfessor J. C. Elsom, Utniversity of Wisconsin. Professor C. A. Waldo, Purdue Uni- versity. Professor J. 'Scott Clark, Northwest- ern University. Professor A. A. Stagg, University of Chicago. Changes in the rules which govern athletics in the west were suggested and imnsortant steps taken toward act- ing indgpendently of the eastern col- leges. A very brief synopsis of the rules and resolutions passed by the conference is as follows: Existing athletic regulations are to be altered regardless of the eastern col- leges. A four year limit to be placed upon college athletes. Preparatory students to be barred from college athletics. - Games with colleges not parties to the agreement to be Tegarded as "practice games." S "Suummer 'nines" to be discouragec. tRough football to be further elitti- inated by the abolition of mass plays. The rules will do away with the last vestige of professionallsi, and football tin particular will be benetiteti. The trules governing the great college sports will be so changed as to elimi- nate all the objectionable features that a committee of experts are able to discover. Professor Stagg of the University of hiciago will be a motn- her of this important committee, and two ether members will be draftes and presented for approval to the members of the conference before Jan. 1, 1898.
