Football to'the uninitiated spectator is apt to seem little more than a mass of men pushing each other aimlessly up and lown a field. But with atter- tion to a few simple rules the skill and design necessary in playing the game can be seen and watching the contest becomes interesiing and ex- hilarating. Impress the following facts on your irniory: Get your seat as near the center of the field as possible. Observe the shape and markings of the field, and if necessary, have these details ex- plained to you. Keep your eye always on the ball and don't watch the play- ers as a mass. Learn wnat :s meant by the following terms: The line-up, inte ference, a fair catch, a down, a scrimmage, attack and dofense, a fake kick, a drop kick, a kick-out, a touch- down, a try at goal, a punt-out. Development of Football. 'ootball originated among the Greeks and Roians who had a ,sport which consisted in kicking about a ball under certain general rules. Its de- velopment tirough the centuries ws upon somewhat uniform lines until, finally, the 'Rugby and Association gaimes were e olved. The former was introduced at Yale in 1871 and since ttien has spread all over the country. The regular intercollegiate mnatches sere started in 1873, when a conven- tion between Columbia, Princeten,, Rutgers and Yale was held. TANDY STUDENTS. Harvard ias a Rifle and Revolver Club with a membership of about 50. nemobers hope that similar organiza- tions will be formed at other colleges, that a league -may be formed, and that there may be intercollegiate rifle and pistol contests. Students of other universities are urged to organize such clubs and join the league. In Eng- land there aro a number of college rifle clubs which meet in competitions. As sa sport rifle shooting is among the cleanest; as a training, nor sport can surpass it. All through life the teach- tngs of rifle:shooting may be felt; it is conducive to health, manliness and fine discrimination and has nsone of the de- basing features to which some sports sink. Shorlr rany other college have its rifle or pistol tean and desire to join a league and arrange to enter an intercollegiate contest they can ad- dress Mr. C. H.
