Dr. Paul Carus Roasted Theologq.
Dr. Paul Carus, editor of the
Monist, opoke to a standissg-room-
only house us Tappan Hull os "The
nature, origin and destiny of the
human soul." The lecture was given
under the auspices of the University
Philosophical society.
Dr. Carus dealt severely with the
theologians, declaring that theology
itself was going over to agnosticism.
"Your solution of the whence and
whither of the human soul is your
region," said he. Christianity has
scarcely dealt with it, but the religi-
ons of the far east have.
"The religion of good will on earth
ushered into the eastern world by
Buddha and into the western world
by Christ, will be found to be the
real religion that science will work
out; they have anticipated it.
"Almost all known religions have
taught immortality of some kind.
Biology and kindred sciences teach
us an immortality of that persever-
ance that worksin each isidividual
and is never lost. And we s.t
distinguish between the words indi-
vidual and personality. The indi-
vidual is lost in death, but the per-
sonality persists."
