It is safe to say that University hail never before held such a multitude of people as assembled there last niglt te hear the epeuiug routedt of the secoud aunual May Festival. The flocks f people who crowded froiu the firt fleer to the gallery iu a vain search fer seats were met by equal Dumbers on a similar hunt, and at the egin- niug of the coucert uearly eight hun- dred were standing. At S o'clock the Choral Uuion filed iu upon the large temporary stage followed shortly by the Bostou Festival orchestra, present- lug when seated an imposiug appear' anee. The program was opened by ani overture, "Anacreon," by Cherubini, exquisitely performed by the orchestra of 5it pieces, under the efficient coin- ductorship of Emit Mollenhauer. tFol- lowing appeared Miss Gertrude Stein. whose solo, the "Concert Scene" by Tschaikowski, was received with warnm applause. After a vorspil from "Lohengrin," performed by the orelies- tra, Mr. Wum. 1t. tRieger sang W ate's Prize. Song from "Die Miestersinger," responding to enthusiastic applause with a second solo. Following the orchestra's rendition of the sym'phony in H minor by Schubert. Miss Rtose Stewart umade hor appearance and sang the aria fronm Graun's "Dec Ted Jlesu." To the tremsendous applatuse which greeted her solo Mliss Stewart responded with anothser of great ex- pre~ssion and sweetness. The following sole, the bass aria lfrom "La Juive," was sung by air. Win, I. Clarke. Mr. Clarke has a voiee of groat depth and strengtih cn- bined with perfeet .1oxibility. The Entre Act from Chabrierrs "G~wendlo- line" perforumed by the orchestra was followed by the quartet from Hoet- hoven's "Fidelio" sung with great effect by the four soloists of the even- ing.. The program was closetS with the March and Chorus from "Taun- hauser," sung by the Choral Union and accompanied by the orchestra. The last number was well given, in spite of the comewhat insufilci'nt prac- tice of the Union on ,his piece.
