The Chicago Alumni Will Give Them a Bouffe Luncheon-The Orators Get a Chance for Rest After Arriv- ing at Iowa City-Prof. Trueblood Starts Tomorrow Afternoon. The 7:30 train over the Michigan Central this morning bore our repre- sentatives on their way via Chicago to this year's Northern Oratorical LeagueS contest. There was a party of three, J., II. Mays, who is to be our speaker in the contest, F. L. In- graham, his alternate, and J. B. Brooks, Michigan's delegate to the a.n nual meeting of the Northern Ora- torical league. A small crowd of ora- torical euthusiasts were gathered to see them off and to wish them suc- cess in the contest. They will be met upon their arrival in Chicago by repre- sentatives of the Chicago Alumni as- sociation, and will be given a boufie luncheon before their departure for Iowa Gity, Ia., where the contest takes place this year, under the auspices of the University of Iowa. It is pos- ble also that Mr. Mays will be pre sented with the Chicago Alumni as- THAT CALIFORNIA MEET Is Now Pretty Certain to Go Through All Right. Tho much talked of dual field day with the University of California is at last pretty sure to go through. Mr. A. W. North, tmanager of the California, track team which will start east to- morrow arrived in town late last ttight. He left for Princeton at S o'clock this morniltg, but before lie left had made arrangements for a, ineeting vith us on our own grounds June G or S. The date that ill finlly be choseu dep)nds upon two things, whether the Board of Control will allow the games to be held on a week day, Thursday, June '6, and whether the game scieduled for June S With Beloit can be changed. As to the arrangements for the meet- ing they are in alnost every respect the same as those Mr. North made with the other colleges and teams ie is to meet, viz., Princeton, Pennsylvania, perhaits Wisconsin, and the Denver A. C. The program consists of the regular list of fourteen events which make up the American Intercollegiate championships, viz., 100 and 220 yards dashes, 440 and 880 yards run, mile run, mile walk, two miles bicycle, 120 sociation medal for the winner of thte and 220 yards turdle, rutitg broad annual university oratorical contest. The intercollegiate contest will take place Friday night, and our repre- sentatives went thus early in order to savo plenty of time for rest. Prof. Trueblood did not go with them this year, but will follow after the Depew reception is over tomorrow afternoon. They were accompanied, however, by one other, Mr. Baldwin, of Denison University, who goes to Galesburg, Ill., to compete in the interstate ora- torical contest. He has been here to be prepared for the contest by Prof. Trueblood. Webster-Jeffersonian Debate, Each yeaxf for several years past the two dehating societies of the law de- partment have held a series of three debates, the winner being the victor in two of the debates. Last year th'e Vebster society won from its com- petitor in two debates and the Jef- fersonian did not deem it necessary to hold the. third. The first debate of this year's series will be held in the law lecture rooti Friday, May 10, comme'cfing at S p. m. A. H. Covert, '95 L, and P. J. Crosby, '96 L, will represent .the Jef- fersoian while Frank Tauke, '05 L, and E P. O'Leary, '96 L, will debate for the Websters.- Mrs. Beman and Mrs. l. E. Cooley will chaperon tle senior social tomor- row evenIng. and high jumps, pole vault, shot put and hammer' throw. As the California team consists of but ten men, it is con- ceded to her that Michigan shall start no more thtan the three men in any one event ansd that only first and sec- ond places shall count, first place counting five points and second place two. The university winning a major- ity of all the points shall receive the championship. Freshman Banquet Friday Night. Arrangements for the freshman ban- quet, which takes place Friday even- ing are rapidly progressing and every- things points to a brilliant success. Hatngsterfer will act as caterer and there will be a full orchetra in at- tenwdance. Tickets may be secured of any member of the cottmittee on arrangements and it is urged that all freshmten who intend to go buy their tickotis as soon as possible, since it is necessary for the committee to know about the number who expect to al- tend. ,Chiago defeated Northwestern Ion- day by a score of 11 to u.
