THE U. OF M. DAILY. '.of ~ WTdv P'ublished Daily (Sundays excepted) durng [a (Colage yar, by THlE U. OF M. INDEPENDENT ASSOCIATION FOa the third time Michigan has carried off first place in the inter collegiate Oratorial contest, and we are almost inclined o feel that we are invincible. The winning of last ight's const proves conclusively that Michigan ranks at the very head of the great universities of the country in this line. We are proud, and we are justifialy so. We are proud of our representative, Mr. F. P. Sadler, who has so ably upheld our honor, we are proud of Prof. Truelood, who trained him, and to whom the sucess of Michigan in such contests iu so largely sie; and we are proud of Mr. Wede meyer, who presided with such fitness. Michigan has ever een ready to show her appreciation of those who have upheld her glory and every one is urged to meet them at the Michigan Central train at 9:o to- night to give the victors an appro- priate reception upon their return. Let every one who has the interest of Michigan at heart attend, and aid in receiving them in a manner suitahle to the occasion. Now that a definite stand has een taken in regard to what will e cone for track athletics this year, it is to he hoped that more interest will e displayed than has een so far. As to sending men ast, we elieve that our proper field is the West, andi that every effort should have been made to send a winning tearn to Chicago ext month. This is the first real intercollegiate champion ship meeting of the West, partici- pated in by the colleges which are our natural rivals, and wyc cannot hut regret that Michigan's influence andi enthsusiasm have not been lent toward "making tie affair a success. However, it must be confessed that there were important otsidec con- siderations, chief amnong whirls was the question of money. To go into the Western championships in tse say Mlichigan's reputation dcnatnd- ed, requiredl more msony tian the athletic managers beliesd possbe to give, and tie Eastern trip has been chosen more fromsfinancial considerations thasn any other. Al- thsougih wv believe a mistake has been smade, swe are glad that a stand has been talent, ansi woisd urge that the matter be iushed to success. If swe are to scott men Eas, se mist make a creditable shoswing. Let every effort be directed to thin end.
