The dawn of day on Friday show- ed the flag staff of'the central col- lege building at Albion adorned with the legend '97 painted upon it. The sophomores and seniors attempted in vain to remove it for an hour or more, and, finally, by breaking the pole away from its moorings and lowering it to the roof of the build- ing, the banner was captured and torn into shreds. The crowd then descended to the ground, where free fights ensued over the frag-. ments of the flag. President Fiske made reference to the affair in chapel, and merely hoped the boys would avoid any infringement of the law. The Minnesota Team. Like " oung Lochinvar come out of the \Vest,'' the University of Minnesota team has surprised those who have carefully watched its play- ing this year. They began the sea- son with a large amount of raw ma- terial and the services of William C. Winter as coach. Winter has labored hard and has developod a very fair style of team play. Still the team is forced to rely mainly on its strength. When Minnesota started on its eastern trip this year they were entirely unheard of in the East. But as they defeated Uniuersity of Michigan and then the members of the Norhwestern League one after another, the opinion became preval- ent that even in Minnesota they know a thing or two about football. Of course a great part of the suc- cess of the team is due to the coach- ing of Winter, whose name may be added as one more to the list of suc- cessful Vale coaches. Cornell will play the Minnesota team in Minne- apolis on Thanksgiving Day and the game is attracting considerable at- tention in the northwest.-Cornell Sun.
