MARIETTA, GA.-In the midst
of a storm of controversy that
erupted following his remarks
that the conservative Christian
Coalition was the "strong force"
in N azi Germany and a racist
influence in slave-holding
America, the Rev. Jesse Jackson
ventured into the enemy's back
yard to chastise incoming House
Speaker Newt Gingrich and his
"Contract with America".
"The most threats on the poor
and working people are coming
from Newt Gingrich," Jackson
said at a news conference Sun
day after delivering an emo
tional sermon near the border of
Gingrich's 6th Congressional
District.
Preaching to a crowd of about
650 at Zion Baptist Church,
Jackson accused the Marietta
congressman of bowing to corpo
rate interests that he said si
phon off $224 billion in tax
breaks and subsidies while ad
vocating welfare reform that
would reduc the poor to'
"pawns."
"Why is he not targeting cor
porate welfare? It's because he's
flying around the country on
their airplanes. Their lobbyists
are in his office, and they're con
tributing to his political action
committee," said Jackson, who
gave a similar sermon later at
Wings of Faith Baptist Church
in Mableton, south of Marietta
in Cobb County northw st of At
lanta. Both churche are in the
7th District.
"IF YOl1'RE GOING to deal
with welfare, put all welfare on
the table and let "need and fair-
n be the determining factor,"
the fou nder and leader of The
Rainbow Coalition aid.
"You who are in Marietta are
in the eye of a torm," Jackson
said. "Much of the wind i com
ing from your own congre s
man."
Jackson was in the midst of a
storm of his own making. The
ci vi} rights leader refused to
apologize for remarks he made
in Chicago following the elec
tion. He, in fact, expanded on his
remarks, saying, "There is an
ideological and historical con
nection" linking the Christian
Coalition of today to the white
supremacists and anti-semites
ofy steryear.
.Ralph Reed, executive direc
tor of the Christian Coalition,
said Jackson should apologize to
the coalition and to "tho one out
of every three voters who said in
exit polls on Election Day that
they were conservative Chris
tians."
IN AN INTERVIEW with
the editorial board of the Chi-
Sun-Times two weeks ago,
Jack on noted the e calating
hostility in political discourse,
then slammed the Christian
Coalition for "a kind of manipu
lative use of Christianity, its
name without its substance,
without its mercy, without its
inclusions. "
In the slave-holding South,
Jackson said, when "Blacks
were considered less than hu
man, ... the Christian right's po
sition was we were the cursed
descendants of Ham. That was
the Christian Coalition of that
time."
