UII He knows how to win. He did it in high school and he is one step away from the completion of a miracle turn around at the college level. Lee Hardman had everything to 10 when he took over as head coach of the Ar kansas-Pine Bluff Golden Li on two year ago.. The school had ju t come off the NAJA "death penalty" and decided not to field a team in the 1992 ea- on. Pine Bluff administrators then decided to look close to home and chose Hardman, one of the winninge t high school football coache in Arkan as, to direct the re urrection of Golden Lion football. Hardman, a former defen ive back for UAPB, had just completed hi ixth traight undefeated eason at Dollarway High School in Pine Bluff. "I have alway wanted to coach at UAPB," Hardman said. " aching at my alma mater i like a dream come During Hardman' tenure at Dollarway, his team cap tured four tate title .made six appearance in tate champion hip game , won nine conference titles and compiled a 34-0 record while winning ix con ecutive conference title . Still, the 18000 UAPB fans present for the Arkansas Cia ic matchup at Little Rock' War Memorial were extremely pleased with what they saw. Hardman' philosophy wa imple. "What I try to do is find football players who have a love for the game", he said, "If he can think, block and tackle, I can make a football player out of that person." The Lio went on to fini h 5-6. Thi year Hardman et out to improve on hi first collegiate eason. Putting together a team of fre hmen, junior college player and tran fers from other school ,the 1994 Golden Lion' football team tarted it' quest for a national title with a 15-14 win over Harding on August 27. UAPB finished the nat 7-3 and barely qualified for the NAJA playoff .
