BOSTON, . (NBNS)-About every twenty years one of the . books comes along. This time it has the disarming title of "The Bell Curve. "But like others before it, the basic argu ment of "The Bell Curve" is that Blacks are intellectually inferior to whites. And the book is receiving sub tantial na tional media coverage and is being quietly pus hed by the coervative wing of the Republican party. The authors of he book are the late Harvard University psychologist Richard Herrnstein and conservative social cien ti t Charles Murray. Murray is an effective promoter of his book because he does not present himself as a rabid racist but 'as a well meaning intellectual who discov red sorn thingwhich he has to expose even though it is unpopular. The thesis of the book is based on the assumption that IQ tests adequately . m sure intelligence. The book how that Blacks consistently scor lower on IQ tests than whites and jumps to the conclusion that the reason for the scor is genetic or that Blacks are just n turally less intelligent than whites. Murray, in effect, argu that there is little that can be done to help BI cks and other minorities because they have lower intelligence. There is ev ry indication that th book will becom a t eller, at lea t in part as a result of he. vy media exposure. Harvard Medical School psychiatry professor Alvin Pous saint says of the book, "It's hurtful. It puts Black people ... in a defensive position and giv s ammunition to tho who would attack them."
