Thirty middle and high
school teachers of French will
be better equipped to intro
duce their students to the
language and cultures of Af
ricans and West Indians of
French expression following
completion of an Institute on
Black Francophone Litera
ture currently in progress at
Wayne State University.
The teachers are from
schools in the Detroit metro
politan area, as well as Flint
and Toledo, that have large
numbers of African-Ameri
can students. Directed by
Associate Professors Louise
Jefferson and Sol Rossman of
the Romance languages and
literatures department, the
program is made possible by
a grant from the National En
dowment for the Humanities,
with additional support from
the Michigan Humanities
Council.
Jefferson says the pro
gram is the first of its type in
the Detroit area. "'I here isn't
much material in secondary
schools that informs students
about the great number of
black writers, past and pre
sent, who speak French, " she
says.
She notes that the Black
French-speaking world en
compasses a vast area,
stretching from the west
roast of sub-Saharan Africa
