HIG D P - Overrid-
ing Highland Park Mayor Lin
ey Porter's veto, the Highland
Park City Council voted to hire
an attorney to advise it on issu
here it differed from the
Mayor. The action was tak n
duringi Moy, Aut 15
tIl ting.
. Council President Dwight
Down ., who previously voted
against the measur , now voted
in favor of it, providing the mar
gin for overriding the veto.
Council Pre ident Pro Tem
Chri tine Franklin pointed out
that Porter recently hired an at
torney to sue three of the council
members hersel f, Titus
McClary, and Greta Johnson on
the council's refusal to pay two
contractors and supporting
Johnson's rescinding of her mo-
ion financing the municipal
complex Porter planned.
Franklin appealed to Downes
and Councilman Frank Ross,
who originally voted against the
measure, saying, "P.I let us
get an outside attorney, because
the Mayor already has one."
Neither Downes nor Ross
were named in Porter's suit.
RO STATED THAT he
would be willing to vote for a
special attorney for the council,
if the motion were amended to
limit the attorney's role to the
qu tions in Porter's suit.
If the motion were amended
in this way, it would be a new
measure and could be subject to
another mayoral veto, if Porter
chose to do it.
Downes' vote in favor of over
riding the veto allowed the old
motion to go through. .

THE WEBWORM is

and its body is covered with very
long, silky gray hairs, according
to McLeod.
Webworms pin web in trees
in early summer and again more
proli fically in fall. Although
they favor app e7 ash and oak
tree webworms attack ov r 120
kinds of fruit, nut and had
trees, as well as roses and orna
mental hrub. The webworm
makes its nest on the ends of
branches.
With economic tim the way they are, and the financial
conditions much of Michigan is in, the average family is doing
away with "extras" such as vacations.
It i , therefore, especially wonderful that so many famili
in the Highland Park area have been able to experience the
customs and culture of an exotic, faraway country, by hosting
a foreign high school student through the not for profit Aca
demic Year in America program, sponsored by the AIFS Foun
dation.
, Teenagers aged 15-18 come to Michigan e ch year, for 5-10
months, and attend Highland Park area high school while
living with Arne 'can families. These young folks arrive with
th ir own healt uranee and spending mon y, and have at
leas three years of Engli h instruction under their 1 prior
to their arrival in the United. States,
Michigan have enjoyed fabulou extended vacations without
leaving their own homes. Famili ,either with or with out
children, get the opportunity to choose a teenager who best fits
in with their lifestyles. What a wonderful opportunity to share
. chigan's traditions and values, and ive so very much in
m!
FAMILIES WHO OPEN their homes and their heart to
an exchange student gain an inside perspective into the cul
tures, values and raditions of another country and also gain
friend for life.
'What a wonderful opportunity for famili . bo h with nd
with u children, to share Michigan's eultur an lifestyle with
a young ambassador from abroad, and r eiv 0 very much in
return! As regional Director for Michigan, I applaud the High
land Park area families who have hosted this year, and encour
age interested families to contact me at 00 322-467 7 ext.
