Mayor ousts Commissi oner Wys nger
By BERNICE BROWN
Benton Harbor Mayor Emma
Hull had City Commi sioner
George Wysinger corted out of
the August 22, city commission
meeting, after he was warned
that he would be removed if he
didn't quit talking.
Public Safety Director David
Walker went over to Wysinger's
seat and had a quiet conversa
tion with him before he escorted
Wysinger out, without disrup
tion. No arrest was made.
In the early' portion of the
meeting, Hull warned commis
sioners as well as citizens that
she was not going to tolerate ver
bal outbursts when someone else
was talking. .
"In this meeting tonight, that
fo any. cnmmissioner and
citizen. I'm not going to tolerate
outburst when somebody else
has the floor. When I hit the
gravel three tim and wh ver
it is, is going to be out of here
tonight," she warned.
Wysinger was asking Walker
a question about what th .poliee
department does when a citizen
calls the department with a com
plaint.
WYS GER, 2nd Ward
Commissioner said, citizens had
called him complaining that
they had called the department
about problems in their neigh
borhood and the officer who re
sponded to the call only rode by
and did not go to the house that
the call was made about.
Walker informed Wysinger
that the department would ad
dress the problem. Wy inger
continued to speak on th matter
and Mayor Hull hit the gravel
informing him that he was out of
order.
"You're out of order. You're
out of order and you're out of.
order," Hull said when Wysinger
continued to speak. "Get him out
of here," she said.
Wysinger has always been
outspoken, but this is the first
time M yor Hull has had him
ejected from a meeting.
After the meeting Wysinger
said Walker at first just asked
him to lea , but he informed
him if he didn't, he would be
arrested.
Wysinger sued the city in
1988 for being ejected from a
meeti ng under then Mayor
Wil Cooke. The suit was t _
tl out of court, grantisig. ys-,
inger $10,000.
The Michigan Citizen
has got all the news.
So, why not
get some?
