Black America must ri up to meet this challenge. Black pe0- ple must be bold and audacious enough to support our own free dom struggle. This kind of "m ge to th grassroots" would galvanize massive support for Dr. Chavis and the AACP. There is a defi ant mood in Black America. I AM CO VINCED that Black people will not allow forces outside of the Black com munity to crush our oldest and largest civil rights organization. Coming out of the NAACP Convention Dr. Chavis should hold mass unity rallies all aero the country to sign up new mem bers, raise money to liquidate the NAACP's deficit and pro mote the mobilizing/organizing of local Summits. Well know local, regional and national leaders, artis ,enter tainers and athletes should be invited to play visibl rol in th e ralli . Th word should go out from th e rallies that Blacli people are willing and abl to protect Dr. Chavis and the NAACP. And, corporate Amer ica should be put on noti that the powerful Black consumer dollar will be used to punish any corporation that withholds funds from the NAACP. The response world be elec tric. The membership rolls of the NAACP would swell by the thou sands and millions of dollars would be raised to make the NAACP more selfsufficient. Equally important, the mo rale of Black. America would be lifted and the moral and political will of Black people would be fortified by such a fighting cru sade. "Too long have others spoken for us" and controlled our d s tiny.
