Indeed, there are many Black people, perhaps a third of the Black Nation, who are living extremely well and perhaps an other third is doing modestly well. But about a third of the Black Nation is, Malcolm X put it, "catching more hell than ever before. " There are some among the well off who are embarrassed by the so called Black underclass and want nothing to do with y o nt of th nti Thou hIm y doing r n- bly w 11 individually, I m cl r t t but for th of God nd th d con rn of loving p r nt J nurturing neighbor hood nd comp ion te and committed community in titu tions, I too could very well be a ualty and statistic. We cannot, must not forsake the challenge of playing ome role in the rescue and restora tion of the race. Nor can we de spair at the enormity of the task. As Jesse Jackson so often say, we must "keep hope alive ." I ORDER TO give real meaning to what might other wise be a rhetorical pbras , each and every African person who is abl must take time, make time to "ret urn to the source" to ren der some level of servi ,large or small, to the uffering masses of our people, too." And, few Black peo ple are as sucee sful they could be because of th nagging and crippling persistence of what Dubois termed the "color line" in American society. It is this color line which, in the final analysis, marks even "successful" Africans as niggers in the eyes and mind of white Americans. 1 subscribe to the view that none of us is free until all of us is free. Therefore, we as Africans in America, must be responsible for and accountable to ch other for the collective welfare and de- all.
