. courts to decide if a legal battle
ensues. FAIR spokesman Rick
Stoddard says if the issue goes
to court he expects the appro­

moved and the fa ndum will
stand. Stoddard said the group
has collected about 100,000 sig­
natures and expects to reach its
goal before the filing deadline of
April 1.
Dave Warnshuis, an inde­
pendent agent with C J Nye In­
surance agency, 117 W. Cass, in
Greenville said he does not
think voters want a referendum.
"When they turned down pro­
posal D, voters made it clear
that (auto insurance reform) is
something they want the Legis­
lature to handle," Warnshuis
said. Proposal D was a similar
ballot proposal to the current
measure that was defeated last
year. Although it set a required
minimum coverage of $250,000
rather than the $1 million in the
new law:
Warnshuis said the legisla­
tion will benefit consumers be­
cause it offers them a choice of
how much medical insurance
they wish to purchase. Offering
choices to consumers instead of
mandatory coverage will lower
rates, he said. Warnshuis said
he does not believe FAIR has the
best interests of consumers in
mind. He s id the group is only
circulating the petition to bene­
fit its own members.
But Stoddard sa id FAIR
wants reform which lowers rates
without trading off benefits. He
id the roll back is deceiving
because it only depends on the
minimum level and the law say
